2016 Kay Brothers Hillside Shiraz
Impenetrable pitch black core with a dark purple red black tinged hue. Lifted blackberry, liquorice and dark plum aromas evolve from the glass with vanillin cedar, light earth and spice notes also present. Medium to full bodied with a fleshy feel to the blackberry, dark plum and liquorice fruit. Things firm up on the finish with dryish tannins making their presence felt. Vanillin oak, earth and spice are also present. Aftertaste of spicy dark plum, liquorice, vanillin oak and scorched earth.
Cellar 5-6 years.
Alc. 14%
Other Reviews….
Hillside is often a bit of a thumper, and while this year’s model is pretty dense, it’s also a bit more *ahem* restrained?
Dense, meaty, plenty of toasty umami oak, blackberry, liquorice, dried herbs. Full-bodied, well packed and full of flavour, porcini mushroom, black fruits, something a bit ferrous, tightly knit dark chocolate tannin, bold finish where dark berries mix with all kinds of meaty/earthy flavours. Impressive. Muscular. Won’t leave you wondering. I don’t usually say this, but if you’re going in early, a good healthy spell in a decanter will do it wonders. Drink 2022-2040+
