2016 d'Arenberg The Laughing Magpie Shiraz Viognier

A blend of 96% Shiraz and 4% Viognier. Superb depth of colour with an inky black heart and very deep dark red black hue. Intense liquorice, blackberry and dark plum aromatics blossom from the glass followed by toasty vanillin oak, earth and blackpepper. Rich plush blackberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits cast an opulent feel across the palate with firm chewy tannins then kicking in leading into a grippy finish. Scorched earth, leather and blackpepper characters also chime in. Concludes with a dryish feel to the robust aftertaste.

Pretty aromatics and a generous palate make this wine easy to enjoy. Vanilla, choc-orange, plum and peppercorn flavours put on an attractive show. It's mostly primary, but the first signs of development have this sitting in a good, mellow place. Drink by 2027.
