Matured for 18 months in 50% new French oak. Very deep dark red black colour with a dark red hue. Aromas of red to black currant gently infused with choc mint are followed by cedary tobacco characters, earthy bay leaf notes and spice. Medium bodied with a generous yet elegant feel the palate has a combination of ripe red to black currant fruits sitting over a background of lightly dusted cedar, minty bay leaf and subtle spicy earth. Well integrated finely grained tannins with a long refined conclusion.
Cellar 5-6 years.
Alc. 14%
There is something about cabernet planted across the Fleurieu Peninsula that showcases a generosity of fruit without usurping the varietal waft of strewn herb and tannin lift. Think cassis, sage, graphite, lead, superlative oak and tobacco leaf. The best wines are equipped with saline tannins that are, in the right hands, shaped like ball bearings. They draw the saliva and lubricate the palate in preparation for the next sip. Interestingly, this is the only wine in the Coates range that undergoes pumpovers rather than punchdowns, simply because of the higher solids to juice ratio making the latter all but impossible. Compelling detail. Sumptuous length. Delicious. Drink by 2031.
