2015 Yarra Yering Dry Red No. 2
Predominately made from Shiraz co-fermented with Viognier and Marsanne with some Mataro also blended in. Impenetrable black dark red core with a deep bright dark red hue. Perfumed aromas of violets, dark cherries and liquorice subtlety laced with clove intermix with notions of faint honeysuckle, light earthy cedar and spice. Medium bodied with a supple elegance to the mouthfeel, the palate features a refined flavour profile of plum, ripe dark cherries and liquorice underscored by elements of subtlety earthed vanillin cedar, faint honeysuckle and spice. A super fine tannin structure combines with perfectly judged acidity which will ensure it will stay fresh for years to come. Long finessed finish of dark cherries, plum, subtle liquorice, light dried clove, infusions of vanillin cedar and spicy earth.
Cellar 8-10 years plus.
Yarra Yerring originally kept things simple, with two reds. One built on the foundation of Bordeaux grape varieties while the other, the No. 2, on the more aromatic supports of those from the Rhone. Dr. Bailey Carrodus, Yarra Yering's charming and highly idiosyncratic founder, prided himself and his wines on their longevity and savoury, European aura. And rightly so. The tradition lives on, manifest in this medium-bodied, graceful expression of 95% shiraz, complemented by dashes of viognier, mataro and marsanne. A bright vermilion robe invites one into a kaleidoscope of violet, baking spice, black cherry and blue fruits of every description. Anise, iodine and vanillin oak sashay effortlessly with diaphanous grape tannins and a flow of natural acidity. Drink by 2038.
