2015 Savart Expression Rose Champagne

Fred Savart is one of the most engaging and energetic vignerons currently in Champagne. Based in the village of Ecueil where most of his holdings are located, Fred also farms a handful of vines across into Villiers-aux-Noeuds, along with most recently accessing plots in Le Mesnil and Oger. His wines are largely based on Pinot Noir, with a smaller amount of Chardonnay, and while initially there was a focus on fermentation in stainless steel, more increasingly his wines are raised in barriques and demi-muids. Each of his wines are born out of inspiration and intuition rather than any sort of set formula, and are routinely some of the best expressions of terroir viewed through the vagaries of vintage.

Expression Rosé is made from 100% Pinot Noir from three old vineyards in the village of Ecueil growing in the lieux-dits of Aillys, Chaillots derrière Moutier and Gillys. It is always a single vintage and zero dosage, and production is very limited at about 600 bottles each year.

Aromas of pear, mint, white cherries and flowers introduce Saavart's rare 2015 Brut Nature Expression Rosé, a medium to full-bodied, layered and vibrant wine that's delicate but concentrated, with good tension at the core and a pure, precise, intensely chalky finish. Like the regular Expression, this is vinified in 500-liter barrels, seeing the addition of some still red wine to give it its color.

From a 77-year-old vineyard of just one hectare with very small yields. A later harvest, from the same plot to make Coteaux Champenoise, is added to make this rosé. Expressive red-fruit aromas with a refined, mineral edge. The palate has incredible resolve with such power and intensity, as well as a very assertive and vibrant phenolic core and good acidity. Holds a long toasty finish with silky tannin. Drink now.
