2015 Porseleinberg Swartland Syrah
Midnight black core with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Leading scents of dried clove, smoked earth and subtle liquorice are trailed by some meaty notes, black olive, graphite and peppered dried herbs. Medium bodied and structured with a stern feel, liquorice and spicy dark plum fruits infused with clove evolve into scorched earth, dried meats, black olive and peppered herbs on the back palate. Firm dry finish with grippy tannins and a medium to long aftertaste.
Cellar 6-8 years.
Alc. 13.5%
Other Reviews….
The 2015 Syrah begins with with a black core of fruit with a grippy and rigid minerality on the nose. The palate is bone-dry with a taught mineral-driven expression that moves to a grippy tannic nature that lingers long on the finish with black spice and plum skin, and black tea. The body is full and brooding confirming the tannins are built for years to come. In youth, this acts like a young Barolo, as it can be unforgiving upon release. I am very interested to see these wines again in the year 2030. Drink 2019 - 2035.

Anthony Mueller – Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate (October 2019)
The 2015 Porseleinberg Syrah contains whole-bunch fruit matured in 90% foudres and 10% concrete eggs. It has a very well defined bouquet of brambly black fruit and white pepper, and an engaging sense of coolness pervades these aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin and almost Northern Rhône in style, offering ample freshness yet at the same time a brooding intensity. There is quality and refinement here from start to finish. A superb Syrah from winemaker Callie Louw. but one I feel needs two or three years in bottle. Want serious, world class South African wine? Get in line here. Drink 2020 - 2038.

Neal Martin - Vinous (August 2018)
This has a gutsy edge, with a mix of steeped fig, boysenberry and blackberry fruit still wrestling with ganache and roasted apple wood notes. A strong, charcoal-coated spine courses through the finish, with waves of tobacco and singed iron echoing. Syrah. Best from 2019 through 2024.

James Molesworth - Wine Spectator (February 2018)
A really perfumed nose of violets, jasmine and incense. Nutmeg, cloves, Chinese spices, dark licorice and dark-chocolate shavings to follow. Full body, grippy and grainy tannins, vibrant acid drive and a long, chewy finish. A granite and savory aftertaste. Really well done. Drink now or hold.
