2015 Penley Estate Helios Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
Impenetrable midnight black core with a deep dark red black hue. Powerful blackcurrant aromas mix with some liquorice, vanillin cedar, spicy tobacco characters, earthy dark chocolate, black olive and light bay leaf notes. Full bodied the richly textured palate is blessed with tremendous intensity delivering mouthfilling flavours of ripe blackcurrants, liquorice and subtle dark chocolates over subtlety toasted vanillin cedar, earthy mocha, dried herbs and spice. The huge core of fruit supported by a solid wall of tannins. Outstanding length and power with a very long aftertaste of ripe blackcurrant, liquorice, dark chocolate, toasty vanillin oak, subtle earthy dried herbs and spice. A powerful Coonawarra Cabernet that displays incredible richness.
Cellar 6-8 years.
Alc. 14.5%
Other Reviews….
The high-shouldered brown glass bottle, with the far extreme of minimalist labelling (the statutory requirements of vintage and alcohol on a detachable neck label) is doubtless calculated to attract discussion. So should the ravishing cabernet made by Yarra Valley winemaker Kate Goodman. It's only medium-bodied, but its intensity is of a scale seldom encountered. The cassis fruit is the ruby set in a necklace of bay leaf and superbly honed tannins. A vineyard bursting into song after 30 years of silence. Drink by 2045.
