2014 Suenen La Cocluette Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Champagne

Champagne, FRANCE
$320. 00
Bottle
$3840.00 Dozen
ABV: 12.5%
Closure: Cork

The most northerly of Suenen’s Oiry parcels, La Cocluette is also home to the Domaine’s oldest vines, planted in 1925 (the younger plantings from this site go into the Oiry Blanc de Blancs). Vines of this age are as rare as hen’s teeth in Champagne and they gift tiny yields of concentrated berries. The land here is largely flat with a somewhat northerly exposure and the ancient roots bury deeply into the dense, Campanian chalk. Put simply, this is a more intense and complex expression of Oiry’s ‘naked chalk’ terroir than the NV Oiry bottling. It’s a superb, dense, tightly coiled and super-mineral Blanc de Blancs, with a long, rocky close. Here the base wine was naturally fermented and aged for 10 months in one 700-litre concrete egg and one 600-litre Stockinger (the same barrel is used each year). It was then aged sur lies for 60 months in bottle until disgorgement in July 2020, dosed with two grams per litre.

Other Reviews....
The 2014 Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Oiry La Cocluette is also very promising, delivering aromas of crisp orchard fruit, white flowers, fresh pastry and wet stones. Medium to full-bodied, precise and mineral, it's tightly wound and vibrant, with a racy spine of acidity and a long, intensely saline finish. Drink 2022 - 2038.

The 2014 Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs La Cocluette Extra Brut is taught and coiled on opening, with pure aromas of chalk and limestone, as well as pithy citrus and smoky incense. The palate is more approachable at this stage and is highly refreshing, with almost candied lime and saline. As it opens, more warming characteristics unfold, with nectarine and almond. This is a fantastic wine to drink over the next 20 years.
