Notwithstanding our recent fantastic pricing on Edradour's Ballechin and several Ardbegs, this is easily one of the most exciting peated whiskies currently on offer, period. Internally, Bunnahabhain refer to the style as “Moine”. Independents aren't permitted to use that title, so they reference nearby Loch Staoisha instead. The undeniably rare 40ppm output is usually reserved for blenders, yet more than holds its own against Islay compatriots. Wide, tall stills seem to synergise dense smoke with Bunnah’s naturally briny character, creating a spirit that's both coastal and deeply peated. At the same time, Staoisha is hard to generalise. The complexity and divergence can be significant. The smoke is strong, sometimes of the cured meat variety, but generally not as maritime as that of Islay's south coast.
