2013 Oliver's Taranga Vineyards HJ Shiraz
The first vintage of Oliver's super premium Shiraz called the 'HJ Reserve' was produced in 2000 as a tribute to the memory of H.J. 'Bert' Oliver. Fruit for the H.J. is sourced from a single block planted in 1948. Maturation took place in French oak (30% new) for a period of 30 months. 2013 was a drought year in McLaren Vale producing super low yields with fabulous intensity, the concentration on the vine flowing through to the resultant wine.
Seriously generous and rich with a powerful core of dense fruit and lavish chocolatey vanillin oak.
Outstanding colour displaying a totally opaque inky black core with a deep dark red black hue. Powerful aromatics of liquorice, ripe blackberries and dark chocolate waft from the glass over hints of boot polish, vanillin oak, subtle earth and spice. Rich and concentrated to the point of being liqueur like the palate is completely saturated with liquorice, ripe blackberries and dark plum flavours that are infused with mocha. Underscoring the abundance of decadent fruit are nuances of vanillin oak, subtle earth and spice. Incredibly opulent and powerful with a robust, firmly built yet ripe tannin structure holding everything in check. Magnificent depth with a very lengthy finish of liquorice, dark chocolate, dark plums, vanillin oak and spicy mocha infusions.
Cellar 6-8 years.
Alc 14.5%
