2013 Eagles Rest Eden Valley Shiraz
A largely unknown Estate to us, Eagles Rest has its base in the Hunter Valley. Established in 2007 it began life growing fruit to sell to the likes of Brokenwood and then employed highly regarded Brokenwood winemaker PJ Charteris to produce wines under its own label. For several vintages it branched out of its Hunter boundaries sourcing some high quality fruit from the Eden Valley. PJ crafting an impeccable Shiraz loaded with fruit and structure whilst still remaining true to its origins.
At $35 this represents good value, priced to clear at $15 it is a phenomenal bargain and an early contender for the buy of the year.
Matured for 14 months in French oak. Superb inky black colour with a deep very dark purple black hue. Blossoming out of the glass are intense aromatics of liquorice, dark plum and fennel with some toasty vanillin cedar, traces of scorched earth and spicy pepper notes following on. Silky on entry with a luscious feel to the fruit it boasts magnificent concentration and length, the mouth engulfed with rich liquorice and dark plum flavours which sit over a back drop of smoky vanillin cedar, subtle earthy leather characters, fennel and pepper. Velvety yet structural tannins provide the framework. Long spicy dark plum, liquorice, toasty vanillin oak, earthy leather and pepper aftertaste. Possibly the best $15 Shiraz you’ll drink all year.
Cellar 4-5 years.
Alc. 13.5%
