2012 Edradour Small Batch Sauternes Cask 13 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

Another Edradour flavour bomb, this time out of sweet wine casks. The distillery filled several Sauternes hogsheads back in 2012 and we can now enjoy the results of these full-term maturations. First-fill hogsheads have imparted a spectacular colour to the liquid, while ramping up the decadence. Juicy raisins and honeyed apricot are the sort of flavours to expect, however, we're told that the wood makes its impact at the finish, so this is less sweet than most 'Sauternes finished' equivalents. 48.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... This isn't your typical Sauternes, the kind often used in finishing to create generic sweet flavors. This is a full maturation in hogsheads, so there's plenty of wood involved, the flavors become more complex, and the cloying sweetness is completely absent. This is how I like Sauternes matured, and it all complements the angularity of Edradour perfectly. For me, it's the perfect whisky for Burns Night.- whiskybase.com
