2011 Castello di Monterinaldi Vin Santo del Chianti Classico (375ml)
The Castle of Monterinaldi, located in Radda in Chianti, sits in the heart of the historic Chianti Classico region. Managed by the Ciampi family since 1961, the 55-hectare estate includes 18 vineyards and 38 terroirs planted with a diverse range of varieties, primarily Sangiovese. Certified organic in 2017, the estate blends tradition with modern techniques to express classic Chianti character. Wines are matured in French oak and then aged in the estate’s underground cellar to ensure quality and refinement.
Vinsanto is one of Tuscany’s most revered after-dinner wines, made from hand-picked grapes dried on trellises to naturally concentrate sugars. Once optimal ripeness is achieved—after 3 to 5 months—the grapes are pressed and the must is transferred to small oak casks stored in attics, where seasonal temperature swings drive a slow, natural fermentation. Aged undisturbed for 20 years, the result is a wine that rewards patience with remarkable depth and complexity.
Other Reviews....
I'm always a huge fan of Vin Santo, and although the number of samples I receive has diminished drastically over the years because the wine has struggled to find a hold in international markets, this remains a very special category of dessert wine made by a handful of passionate producers in Tuscany. The Castello Monterinaldi 2011 Vin Santo del Chianti Classico Occhio di Pernice (in a precious 375-milliliter bottle) is 90% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo and 5% Trebbiano. Despite being made with mostly red grapes, it has turned a unique color somewhere between amber and dark gold with a syrupy consistency. Aromas recall forest floor, dried mushroom, honey and dried apricot. This is a tiny production of 1,200 bottles. Drink 2022 - 2045.
