2009 Claxton's Warehouse No.1 Blair Athol 12 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
If you wanted to saturate a whisky with secondary flavours, a PX quarter cask would probably do the trick. But nosing indicates this has been handled with some sensitivity. Sweet sherry is clearly creeping in at the edges, though a kind of summer pudding lift to the aroma is retained. And the palate is the same, in fact, an almost citrusy tang is left intact, with the PX making its mark texturally, adding fruit cake, mocha and dark chocolate to Blair Athol's teeming spices. A big whisky, and a relative bargain in the heavyweight sherried stakes. 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 148 bottles.
Notes from Claxton's... Nose: Treacle and syrup. Heavy Sherry notes with an oak smokiness. Palate: Sweet and malty with Indian-Sherry-like notes coming through.
Finish: Long and rich. Again oak smoke comes through with the rich spices.
