Caol Ila is another distillery that seems to be quietly dropping off independent portfolios, most likely due to a change in Diageo's policies rather than by choice, as the quality is always high and the style is in demand. Cask #6 yielded 677 bottles from an oloroso sherry butt. Anticipate notes of ashy smoke, seashore, cured meats and a rich fruitiness wrapped up in an intense, peppery delivery. Other reviews... quite complex, strong with a strong cask strength, but definitely drinkable neat. Nose: Smoke, first like when smoking ham, then the hospital-like aroma comes into play. Nutty and with roasted notes. Afterwards, aromas of lemon emerge. There are also chocolate, leather, and cherries. Taste: Smoke – ham smoke. Cherries and leather, nutty again.
