Amon Ra is Ben Glaetzer’s flagship Shiraz named after an Egyptian God who was considered to be the King of all Gods. Ben describes the 2006 vintage as “a stunning year”- the slow even ripening conditions creating parcels of Shiraz with huge intensity and perfume. Fruit for the 2006 Amon Ra was sourced from a range of low yielding (0.25 to 1 tonne per acre) vineyards, aged between 30-120 years old, with a strong emphasis on fruit quality, rather than simply selecting parcels of fruit because they were from old vines. The wine was matured for 15 months in 100% new oak of which 20% was American and 80% French. It was bottled unfiltered. Displaying Barossa’s hallmark richness and power, the wine also has a sense of elegance about it.

A spectacular Red!

Totally saturated – black purple colour with black purple hue, with paint like cling to the glass. Superbly perfumed nose – liquorice, spice, blackberry and confectionary. The flavour profile is a total concentrate of vanilla, blackberry and liquorice allsorts followed by an explosive black pepper back palate. Totally mouthfilling. Fine grained tannins, perfect balance. An explosive aftertaste of vanilla, liquorice, plum and blackberry. An Outstanding Wine!

Other Reviews...
Amon-Ra has become one of Australia’s icon wines. Made from 100% Shiraz sourced from vineyards ranging in age from 80-120 years and with microscopic yields of 0.5 tons per acre, the 2006 Amon-Ra was aged for 15 months in new French and American oak. The wine is a thick, glass-coating, purple/black in color. The aromas cover a wide range of scents including smoke, vanilla, pepper, Asian spices, coconut, espresso, blueberry, and chocolate. Thick, rich, layered, and complete, this monumental wine offers extraordinary intensity and length. It requires 10-15 years to fully evolve and should easily last through 2040. Hats off to Ben Glaetzer for producing an extraordinary portfolio! The renowned winemaker, Ben Glaetzer, sources all of his fruit for this label from the Ebenezer district in the northern Barossa. Many knowledgeable experts cite this sub-region as the finest in the Valley. Drink 2017 - 2040

Impenetrable colour; a full-bodied palate, stacked to the gills with layer-upon-layer of blackberry, prune, licorice and plum fruit, yet the tannin and oak are not overdone, nor is the alcohol. Drink 2021
