Chateau Coutet’s 95 acres of vineyard are the largest and, arguably, oldest in the Barsac AOC. The Chateau’s famous square tower has looked out over the estate since the late 13th century. Wine production was first documented by the acquisition of the estate in 1643 by Charles le Guerin, Lord of Coutet. History drips from the time honoured label – US President (and famed wine connoisseur) Thomas Jefferson praised the wines as the best of Barsac. Some 6 years later the Chateau was seized by the State during the French Revolution and the proprietor beheaded. Thankfully modern devotees of the sweet elixir from Sauternes do not have to pay such a high price for their drinking pleasure.

Other Reviews….

Light to medium gold with a greenish hue, this wine exhibits wonderfully pure notes of wood spice such as vanillin, honeyed citrus, a hint of under-ripe peach, and touches of creme brulee and marmalade. With great acidity and finesse, this is a medium-bodied, impressively endowed, but generally very racy, restrained style of wine that should age beautifully for 25 or more years. It is not the sweetest, and by no means the biggest wine of 2006, but it has nobility tattooed all over it.

Almost as excellent as the 2003. There's intense botrytis spice on the nose, with lemon peel and dried pineapple. Full-bodied, superspicy and intense. Extremely racy. A beautiful wine. Best after 2014. –JS
