2006 Buckshot Vineyard The Square Peg Zinfandel
Many wine drinkers associate Zinfandel with California, however DNA ‘finger printing’ has revealed that it is genetically linked to the Croatian grape Crljenak Kastelanski and the Italian grape Primitivo. The vines are adaptive to a wide range of soils and climates, being quite vigorous. Zinfandel produces large bunches of thin skinned fruit, which means that bunch rot can be a problem. Zinfandel is also known for its uneven pattern of ripening – within each bunch there are likely to be berries which are at different stages of being fully ripened. To overcome the problem, bunches are usually hand harvested as fully ripened bunches and or undergo single berry selection.
Very deep black crimson colour with black crimson mauve hue. Top note of spice, followed by black cherry and liquorice allsorts with a black pepper end note.
