2005 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon
First produced in 1954 the Wynns Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon has become a benchmark wine for followers of Coonawarra Cabernets. Winemaker Sue Hodder has produced an outstanding example of a fully ripened Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon that avoids any of the dreaded herbaceous characters that can be evident in cooler vintages. Produced using only the estates top 25% of Cabernet fruit the wine was matured for 19 months in a combination of new and seasoned French and new American oak.
Coonawarra experienced near perfect conditions for the 2005 vintage, a slightly warmer than usual, dry summer allowed even and early ripening of the grapes which resulted in optimal flavour development.
The colour saturation of this wine is impressive being almost opaque with deep black crimson colour and hue. The nose delivers classy Cabernet aroma of blackcurrant, cedar, vanilla and violets, followed by spice and a hint of liquorice allsorts. The palate structure is quite tight but has the ability to yield over time. Blackcurrant and cedar flavours are supported by fine grained tannins, elegant with aftertaste of blackcurrant, violets and cedar persisting.
