Winner International Trophy as ‘Best Red Bordeaux Varietal Over £10’ at the ‘2008 Decanter World Wine Awards’

The International Trophy is the highest accolade that can be achieved at the annual event with over 9,219 wines tasted and only 26 chosen as the best of their region and finest of their style. The 2005 Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon was one of the final 26. The 2005 release has been recognised by many as one of Vasse Felix’s finest Cabernet Sauvignons to date, the Decanter judging panel describing the wine as “Expressive, tight knit blackcurrant nose with a hint of mint. Elegant smoky fruit, cedary medium-weight. Graceful and youthful. A silky texture with some pretty, late tannins”

Winemakers David Dowden and Virginia Willcock have produced a classic example of Margaret River Cabernet. Made from a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 5% Shiraz and 3% Malbec, 85% of the fruit was sourced from the Margaret River with balance coming from the Great Southern region. The wine was matured for 16 months in a combination of new and old French oak with a small portion of American oak also employed.

Opaque black crimson colour with black crimson hue. Hints of dark chocolate, mocha, blackcurrant and spice showing strong varietal character. The palate has good weight – there is a faint trace of stalkiness, but is acceptable. Flavours of spice and cassis on the palate, showing good weight. Fine grained tannins, perfect balance. Long spice and cassis aftertaste.
