2001 Masam SRL Balmenach 20 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

Highly-prized as a filler for blends, the name alone should catch your attention as Balmenachs are extremely rare. Selected from fresh fill Sherry cask No. 24250, the opening whiffs present fumes of alcohol, oak shavings, old books and a dry nuttiness; Five minutes of air contact broadens the aromas to include dried orange peel, fruity dark chocolate, sulphur and hazelnut. The profile here is comparable to older Glengoynes: dry, chewy, riddled with hazelnut and walnut infused dark chocolate, rounded off with bitter peel freshness and wood spice. Wisps of matchbox, spent pipe tobacco and old leather add to the charm. Frail sugars make a late recovery in the form of ginger snaps and brandy soaked fruit cake.
