1999 Primo Estate Il Briccone Shiraz Sangiovese

Joe Grilli is passionate about Italy (hardly surprising!) and he has produced a run of highly sophisticated, Italian inspired wines. The Shiraz Sangiovese is possibly the most successful Australian interpretation of this variety to date. Grilli adds depth and complexity to the blend by incorporating small portions of Barbera, Nebbiolo and Cabernet. At first sight, the colour is somewhat disappointing, but that is hardly surprising since many of the Italian varieties have low pigment extraction levels. Medium body, brick red, crimson colour. Delightful perfumed nose, with aromas of violets, strawberries and spice, followed by blackberries and truffle. The palate has Italian style and elegance, but is also strong in Italian flavour. Excellent weight and mouthfeel, with flavours of leather, earth, spice, cherries and raspberries. Perfect balance with fine grained velvet tannins and very long aftertaste of stewed plum, spice and liquorice. Cellar 3-4 years.
