1999 McWilliams Maurice O'Shea Shiraz
This super-premium wine is made exclusively from 120-year-old vines grown on heavy, rich, volcanic soils on Mount Pleasant’s Old Hill Vineyard, located in the foothills of the Brokenback Range. This revered vineyard was established in the 1880s by the King family, and was purchased by the late Maurice O’Shea in 1921. Record rainfall during winter and spring 1998 ensured strong grapevine growth and the prospect of generous yields. Cooler than normal weather from October through to December allowed for the production of more refined, delicate fruit flavours. The harvest was characterised by intermittent rain patches, which promoted healthy vines and sound, ripe fruit.
Deep crimson red colour with purple hues. On the nose complex array of plums, red berries and chocolate with hints of spice and cedar. A mouth filling wine with lashings of plum, berry, cedar and spice flavours supported by a firm, yet supple, tannin structure. The depth and purity of fruit has created a rich wine with great texture and length.
This wine has the weight and fruit structure to support careful cellaring for up to 20 years. Decant before serving.
