1998 Veritas Winery Hanisch Vineyard Shiraz
Notes sourced from Veritas Winery.
The Veritas Hanisch vineyard lies high on the western slopes of the Barossa Valley, close to the famous Heysen Walking Trail. It takes its name from the Hanisch Family, pioneers in the district who tended the land from the 1930's, establishing some of the vineyard. Veritas' approach to viticulture is to nurture the grapes into producing very low yields, maximising grape flavours in the vineyard. By hand pruning, the potential yield of the vines are controlled and the integrity of the vineyard maintained through an emphasis on organic fertilisation. The 1998 vintage has excellent qualities, displaying rich, fascinating berry fruit, laced with spice aromas and warm inviting oak. The palate is generous with ripe fruit and long lingering tannins, making this full bodied wine a pleasure to drink now or long into the future.

"The virtually perfect 1998 Shiraz Hanisch (100% Shiraz from 26-year old vines that achieved 14.7% alcohol) is a huge but impressively balanced effort. Offering up notes of beef blood, blackberries, and jammy cassis liqueur, This viscous, but not heavy, massive, full-bodied, fabulously concentrated 1998 has a finish that lasts for just under a minute. It represents the essence of Shiraz. Three hundred cases were produced. It can be drunk now because it is so luxuriously rich, but don't expect secondary nuances to develop for at least another 5-8 years. " Drink 2006 - 2026
