1998 Seville Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
The Seville Estate Vineyard has always been a prolific producer of leaf, being situated on rich volcanic soils. Viticulturally the challenge has always been to bring the vines into balance and maximise flavour. Dr. Peter MacMahon used to get the balance reasonably right - the new regime under the stewardship of Brokenwood seem less successful. This wine should have been a stunner, but misses the mark.
Medium body, with crimson colour and brick red edges. The nose has some subtle earthy, farmyard notes, followed by spice, blackcurrant and a hint of leather. The palate is relatively simple – light, with flavours of spice and stewed fruit and blackcurrant. Fine grained dry tannins with earthy stewed fruit and leather aftertaste.
