The name Rufus Stone comes with a big baggage of ancient history. It's claimed that Sir Walter Tyrrell was one of England's finest bowmen and whilst hunting with the dreaded and much hated King William (Rufus) accidentally shot him and subsequently fled to France, only to be forgiven shortly thereafter and recalled to run the English Military. The Rufus Stone marks the spot where the King fell. What a story to put on a back label. Now for the wine. This is yet another example of the outstanding 1996 vintage in McLaren Vale. The wine was matured in a combination of new, one year old and two year old American oak for 14 months. Opaque crimson colour. Excellent nose - quite pronounced with aromas of spice vanilla and blackberry. Generous palate with rich ripe blackberry flavour and a hint of liquorice. Excellent balance with long liquorice, spice and blackberry aftertaste. Cellar 5 -8 years.
