Old grain whiskies have captured the imagination of many aficionados and whisky professionals. One in that number is the former manager of Springbank, Frank McHardy, who nowadays, even markets his own selections! North British is a distillery that often pops up. We predict it will continue to do so. It's now a joint venture between Diageo and The Edrington Group churning out massive volumes for blends. Older bottlings like this are a little more interesting because North British has historically distilled a lot of maize (corn). When the whiskies are fully mature, it can make them taste a little more 'malty' or heavy (but not always). Today, it's another black-tinned Signatory at what we would say is a very reasonable price. 33 years in a refill oloroso butt reduced the final outturn to 430 bottles. 53.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Smooth and mature. The influence of the Oloroso butt is evident in dark raisins with other dried fruits, rum notes, cake spices, and lightly roasted wood notes. Taste: Soft and creamy, typical of a long-aged grain whisky. Notes of pastry, toffee, and toasted bread, accompanied by spicy warmth and nutty sherry aromas. The 33 years of maturation provide elegant depth without being overpowering. Finish...long and balanced, with malty sweetness, a hint of cinnamon, and dried dates. - whiskybase.com
