Asta Morris is a Belgian independent bottler of single cask whiskies that opened for business in 2009. Casks are carefully selected with the intention to "fall in love at first sight". In fact, that’s just how the company started: while visiting Benriach distillery, founder, whisky writer and former Malt Maniac, Bert Bruyneel, fell in love with a cask. When he discovered it was for sale, the 1975 hogshead became the company’s first bottling. Besides Europe, markets are limited to Japan, Hong Kong and recently, Australia. Like other indies, the outturns are typically around 200 bottles with around fifteen malts offered annually, on top of rums, cognacs, gins and calvados. For this mystery bottling, Bert has secured (or matured) a serious age statement: Tasted from a 20ml sample, the bouquet opens barley-forward with malted milk, beeswax and cocoa backed up by subtle citrus. The palate boasts a depth that only comes with great age; Ovaltine and delicate cut grass notes combine in a medium-bodied delivery showing remarkable vitality. The finish trails off with ginger biscuits, fruit'n'nut chocolate plus hints of dried grass in tow. Bourbon matured in cask #AM136. 125 bottles. 40.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
