Cody Road proprietors, Ryan and Garrett Burchett, are Iowa's craft distilling evangelists.
"You may not know that over 90% of American whiskies are made by 8 distilleries. While they make great whiskies, there are a lot of similarities. We feel craft distilling is at the same point that craft brewing was 15-20 years ago when the market saw only beer and light beer. Then the small guys introduced new and exciting flavors that changed the face of beer in this country. We want to be part of a similar revolution in spirits."

Their bourbon is made form a mash of 70% corn from LeClaire, 20% wheat and 10% unmalted barley - all from local growers in keeping with the micro distillery approach. It's aged in newly charred 30 gallon oak barrels, about half the size of a traditional whiskey barrels.

Tasting note: [No batch number noted on the sample] Pale Gold. Scents of toasted marshmallow are followed by vanilla, wheat biscuit then hints of fruit cake. A light entry leads into a tingly, warm delivery featuring weetbix flavours and peppery spice; somewhat fierce alcohol throws the balance off key. Hints of grilled corn and damp cedar in the aftertaste. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... BATCH 8 tasted] “Aged less than 4 years.” Sharp new oak (this is 30-gallon barrel aged), with hot cinnamon and sugar in the nose. Dry, and a bit hot up front, but its wheat comes through in a smoother, sweeter middle and a gentle, warm finish where corn finally appears. No real flaws here; it could be better integrated, but it has a rough appeal.

Bright amber color. Interesting aromas of singed praline, waxed wood, fruitcake and faint pepper smoked jerky with a supple, dry-yet-fruity medium body and a racy, candied citrus and nuts, baking spices, cocoa, salted caramel, white pepper, and cedar finish. Good depth and intensity for cocktails.
