Lost Spirits Distillery Leviathan I Cask Strength Single Malt Whiskey (700ml)

Lost Spirits is a small distillery dedicated to making expressive whiskies inspired by Islay. They bottle at cask strength, release only single cask bottlings, and do not chill-filter.

At 110 ppm, Leviathan I is one of the three most heavily peated whiskeys in the world. California grown organic barley has been peated with vast quantities of course cut Canadian peat.The intense smoke is balanced by maturation in casks that previously held an exotic botrytised cabernet sauvignon. The result is a slightly sweet, powerful, and densely smokey whiskey.

Tasting note: Deep copper appearance with some fine sediment evident. Used tea leaves and resin at first. Beeswax follows. Then almost class Mezcal-like with its exotic, smokey, baked vegetable notes. Five minutes in the glass the malt starts peaking through. Fascinating. The palate again resembles Anejo Mezcal more than whisky as we know it. Medium dry, gently warming spirit with good concentration. Candlewax, spice and brine feature. Beeswax aftertaste. Exceptionally long. Finally turns to old cigarette ash as it fades. 56% Alc./Vol.
