Time can be a double edged sword when it comes to wine - it can confer perfection or destruction, however, there is a point when perfection is reached, held for a time, and then lost.In recent times, two extraordinary wines have been tasted, both fortified and both received incredibly high ratings. One was the extremely rare Lindemans Show Reserve Rutherglen Muscat Z295. This wine received a perfect score - 100/100. A very rare event. This wine is not available.

The other extraordinary fortified was the Tawny Port Z186. This wine was drawn from the famous RF1 Solera and has an average age of 25 years. In both cases age has conferred a unique depth and concentration of flavour. Made from a blend of Shiraz, Grenache and Touriga grown in the Barossa Valley and Coonawarra. Magnificent onion brown colour with green olive rim. (The olive rim is an indicator of great age). The nose is one of those rare and exhilarating experiences – even for a novice that knows nothing of wine, here is the immediate sensation that here is something very special. Complex aromas of marmalade, raisins, Christmas cake, hint of caramel, nutty rancio and very fine spirit. On the palate, there is a real complexity and the release of a mature, yet lively flavour profile. Layers of marmalade, orange peel, raisins, nuts and Christmas cake are seamlessly bound together. Outstanding length and complexity with an exceptionally fine spirit and very long aftertaste of dried orange peel, marmalade and nutty rancio flavour.
