- ABV 45%
A watershed bottling being the brand's first new mash bill in 150 years (70% rye, 18% corn and 12% malted barley). This follows on from what started with an “Unaged Rye” in 2012. Reportedly at least fours years old (though not confirmed) the barrels are aged in the upper regions of the barrel house where they're exposed to broad temperature variations.Tasting note: [Barrel 16-7297 tasted] Beaming deep amber colour. Initial whiffs of shellac are subdued by attractive aromas of apple pie, oak shavings, clove and later, peachy fruit in an unusual opening bouquet. Air contact adds dusty cocoa and cool mint. Semi sweet entry leads into a well rounded rye - no sharp edges here, in fact almost buttery in the mouth with gentle spice, glace cherry and peppermint, finishing with Jack Daniel's signature maple-char flavours and cherry notes through the aftertaste. A textural, mid-range style that hits all the right notes. 45% Alc./Vol. Other reviews...this rye doesn’t disappoint. Butter-toasted rye bread and vanilla, with hints of herbs and campfire smoke. Then fruit…a lot of fruit: pear, banana, pineapple, followed by a bevy of sweets—caramel, butterscotch, and toffee, mainly—with a delightful cinnamon bread finish. This skews more toward bourbon than the Indiana ryes, and that’s a good thing. 90 points Reviewed by: Fred Minnick (Summer 2016) - www.maltadvocate.com
