A first for our shelves are three new whiskies from Israel.
'Golan Heights' is one of less than a handful of active distilleries in the country, founded in 2014 and located in the North. Canadian expat, David Zibell, owner, distiller and founder, operates two stills and has a symbiotic (and enviable) relationship with the nearby Golan Heights Winery which solves the problem of sourcing quality wine casks. x-Bourbon barrels are also used. Considering Israel shares a climate comparable to other 'new' whisky producers like Australia, India and Taiwan, you can expect these spirits to peak relatively young.

This unusual bottling from a two grain mash (malted barley and wheat) spent 30 months in a red wine cask, following which a portion was then finished for six months in a 50 litre cask which previously held brandy (also distilled at Golan Heights). Released to celebrate Israel’s 70th Independence day, the final outturn was a miserly 70 bottles!
Exceptionally limited.

Other reviews... This is a complex and layered dram, with the brandy finish piping it up. The Vino base lends itself to the freshness the brandy imbues. This really is lovely stuff. 49.7%. Alc./Vol.
