Those who already enjoy the subtleties of the Glenmorangie taste will also enjoy their range of wood finished products which seek to add complimentary characteristics. This whisky is initially matured in American oak casks which have held Bourbon. The Bourbon seasons the wood, releasing its natural sweetness and absorbing undesirable flavours. After a period of at least ten years, the whisky is transferred into selected casks which have previously contained Madeira for the last few years of maturation.

Notes from Glenmorangie.... Glenmorangie Madeira Wood Finish is bright amber in colour with a pale orange hue. The palate is 'cool' but follows with a spiciness on the tongue, fresh and citrusy as it passes, but with a firm dry finish. The Madeira wine flavours are almost unidentifiable. This is not as sweet as the sherry version and possesses a distinct tangy character. ...With a drop of water: fresh black pepper emerges and a strong trace of humbugs (more than just 'toffee and mint' but having both these characteristics). Some citrus and again the intriguing burnt characteristic, with some undefinable winey undertones. After a while in an open glass, deeper fruit and spice notes emerge, like Christmas cake.

Further notes…Nose: Fresh and lively with grassy, oaky, vanilla notes and salty extremes. Palate: Teasing sweet and sour balance of nits and raisins, chocolate orange and brine. Finish: Very warming, still teasingly raisiny until a faintly peaty fryness finally prevails. Comment: Glenmorangie in spite of its lightish origins can walk the wood finish tight rope with majestic balance. 8.5 /10 - www.whiskymag.com
