If the whiskey world has anything that comes close to the kind of hysteria certain wines generate in sensible adults, this is it: Five limited-release whiskeys of various ages, recipes and proofs simply known as 'The Antique Collection'. Introduced more than a decade ago these whiskeys have become a cult favourite and since 2000 have garnered a swathe of awards from such notable publications as Whisky Advocate Magazine, Spirit Journal and Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible.

It is rare to find these outside the U.S., but we make an effort to secure some every year for those Australian enthusiasts looking for the most incendinary whisky sensations on the planet.

Tasting note: The deep polished mahogany colour is spectacular and unblemished. Nosing detects penetrating aromas of fresh cut American oak, balsamic and shellac. Manuka honey enters in the second phase followed by an enticing spicy rye dimension that adds apple pie, cinnamon, clove and hints of spearmint to the wonderfully complex bouquet. Further inspection releases the peppers adding a prickly sensation to the nostrils before the profile settles into a more typically Bourbonesque range. A deceptive entry preludes the full throttle yet deftly balanced attack that’s delicately bitter sweet with flavours of mocha, vanilla, charry oak and pepper followed by a late choc fudge burst. Fades slowly and finishes long as the warming spices persist. Not as mind-numbingly intense as some previous bottlings but still formidable. Stagg continues to hold its own as one the world’s great Bourbon experiences. 64.1% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Less alcohol than past Staggs, even at 128.2° proof. This whiskey has always been one of the best in the portfolio, and its reputation is intact. Sweeter and fuller in body than recent releases, and not as masculine, making it easier to drink. (Don’t worry; it’s still a big Stagg, but with a smaller “rack.”) Vanilla taffy, nougat, dates, polished oak, roasted nuts, leather, and tobacco: it’s all there.
