Elements of Islay Pe5 Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (500ml)

Islay, SCOTLAND
$399. 00
Bottle
$4788.00 Dozen
ABV: 57.9%

One of a new collection of seriously fun whiskies produced by Specialty Drinks to celebrate Islay. The series is produced by vatting between 5 and 20 barrels of whisky from a single distillery.

This is the fifth 'Pe' (Port Ellen) release. The higher price tag reflects the rarity of this whisky. Port Ellen was closed in the slump of 1983, but the whisky made in the 17 or so years between its re-opening and final closure has acquired a reputation as some of the finest to have been made on Islay in that time. For these reasons Port Ellen has become one of the most sought-after of the lost distilleries by collectors, investors and aficionados.

Pe5 has been sourced from a single sherry cask as opposed to Pe3 which hailed from a single bourbon cask. 100% sherry matured releases are a rarity in Islay, and a double whammy being that it came from Port Ellen! The colour on this is much darker in the flesh.

Tasting note: Pale gold appearance. Intrigueing aromatics include a sooty top note over flashes of brown sugar and hints of elastoplast. A fascinating amalgam that works. Entry is soft and creamy building into a semi sweet profile including shortbread, soft charry oak, lanolin and spice. Superb balance and mouthfeel. Finish is creamy, seductive and slow, with cascades of pepper, lanolin followed by hints of potpourri and excellent length.
Not all Port Ellens are this good. If only once, it deserves a place in your drinking career.
