Deanston Virgin Oak Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

Highlands, SCOTLAND
$99.99 Bottle
  • ABV 46.3%

We don't see many new releases from Deanston and this one caught our attention for more than one reason. The malt is first matured in ex-bourbon casks giving the liquid a wonderful zesty character, and then finished in new (virgin) oak barrels which impart additional wood notes including subtle spiced aromas.

Certified organic, Deanston produce their own clean energy to run the distillery. Bottles and packaging use recycled and recyclable materials.
This edition is also non-chill filtered and bottled at over 46% for maximum flavour.

Other reviews... Does exactly what it says on the tin: absolutely brimming with virgin oak...Quirky. Don't expect this to taste anything like Scotch.

...Finished in virgin oak casks, so I would expect to find some wood influence here somewhere. Indeed I do, particularly on the finish. There’s no age statement, but on the nose it comes across as a bit youthful. Honeyed vanilla, lemon, pear, fresh-cut grass, and wood shavings on the nose. More of the same on the palate, with sweet notes to the fore, and virgin oak influence (wood shavings, polished leather, and a firm oak grip). Very individualistic, but the flavors don’t seem fully integrated. (Perhaps a bit more aging in non-virgin casks?)
