The popular demand for big peaty, smoky styles of malt whisky has seen producers turn out some exciting products (think Ardbeg Supernova and Smokehead), not to mention the classics like Lagavulin and Laphroig. The master blender at Compass Box John Glaser endeavoured to create just that seven years ago with the release of the well received 'Peat Monster', one of four from his signature range, each highlighting the various styles whisky has to offer. A limited reserve version of 'Peat Monster' has been released to commemorate the whisky in its 5th year. Peatier, smokier, richer, higher in strength and double the size of the classic version. The appeal is certainly there!

The whisky is sourced from Islay single malts distilled in the village of Port Askaig and then balanced with Ardmore single malt from the village of Brora. The wood is primarily a mix of first-fill and refill American oak, plus approximately 2% new French oak. In typical Compass Box fashion this whisky is non-chill filtered and contains no artificial colouring.

Other Reviews...This bold whisky is packed with Islay and coastal character, showing tarry rope, brine, and a hint of seaweed, along with teasing smoked olive, anise and mustard seed. There is some civility to the whisky: sweeter notes of vanilla wafer, baked apple, ripe peach and cream attempt to soften the blow. Smoke and tar on the finish. Nicely done.
Rating: 92 - John Hansell, Malt Advocate
