2008 Murray McDavid Benchmark Single Cask Glenallachie 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - Australian ExclusiveSpeyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$220. 00Bottle$2640.00 DozenABV: 50%Present day Glenallachies are either heavily oaked or wine-driven - or both - placing them alongside some of the biggest malts on the market. Here we have an importer's selection that leans away from the extremes of Billy Walker’s official bottlings, straddling a line between older Glendronachs or Glengoynes, making for something more sophisticated in the genre. At first taste, leather and bitter peel lead into biscuity malt followed by juicy oloroso; time in the glass develops hints of honeyed cereals, curaçao, cinnamon buns, cafe cremes, walnuts and dark chocolate. It takes water well, but on its own this is perfectly approachable and worthy of the attention of fans of complex, drier-styled malts. Kudos to the Australian importer for bringing something different to the table! Eleven years in a 600L sherry butt / twenty one months in a 1st fill Oloroso cask. Limited to 287 bottles. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Built on texture and breadth, this 2023 Barossa Valley Marsanne is rich and dense, while retaining focus and poise. There are notes of white pineapple and white pepper, sourdough crust and spring flowers, blonde tobacco and brine. The wine is gorgeous, silky and seamless. Following hot the heels of the outstanding 2020 vintage, the superb 2021 release lacks nothing in terms of power or intensity on its predecessor yet shows a shade more refinement and has managed to garner even more substantial scores from the critics.

Maturation takes place in a mix of new French and American hogsheads for a period of 30 months.
Seductive black and blue fruits wrapped up in a refined opulence are delivered with impressive intensity and power.Dense inky black heart with an equally deep dark red black hue. Dark plum, liquorice and dark chocolate aromas waft out of the glass complimented by some high quality vanillin oak, hints of mocha, blueberry and subtle earth notes. I have to say that there have been some wonderful wines from this vintage, and this masterpiece is right up there with the best of them. It’s a limited production release and given the quality of the vintage it makes sense it has been created in this season. The low crops have created a wine of tremendous concentration and intensity, but at the same time the balance is superb. Spicy blackberry and plum with a ladling of dark syrup chocolate and subtle coffee grinds. Loving it now. Drink 2025-2045.

The team’s Reserve is a barrel selection from the harvest of their oldest blocks of Barossa Shiraz, and only made in the best vintages. 2021 is categorically one of those ‘best vintages’. The oak used to mature the wine will be a mix of new French and American hogsheads and the time spent in them will be up to two and a half years. Under cork. Not surprisingly, there is a serious oak influence in this wine, but it is integrating superbly. An opaque maroon, this is a big, bold and delicious red, Richly flavoured, with mocha, soy, coffee beans, dark chocolate, cassis, beef stock, licorice and axle grease. Fine acidity here, running the length, silky but rather abundant tannins and great length. This is a twenty year proposition. Drink 2025-2045.

Nikka Coffey Malt Japanese Whisky (700ml)JAPANReduced from $134.99$109. 99Bottle$1319.88 DozenABV: 45%Jim Murray's Japanese Whisky of the Year 2018.
Yet another first for Australia - Nikka decided to add their Coffey Malt to their core portfolio in 2014. It completes the Coffey range, originally launched in September 2012 with the Nikka Coffey Grain. Each offers insight into the whiskies that constitute the base of Nikka’s blends. This edition is produced from 100% malt, though technically it's not a single malt due to its distillation in Coffey stills (Nikka imported two from Scotland in 1963). Scheduled as a European exclusive, we're very fortunate to have received a tiny quantity into Australia.
Tasting note: Brilliant deep gold colour. Semi-sweet aromas of creamy soda, creme caramel, vanilla bean and shortbread followed by flavours of butter menthol lozenge, cream biscuits and an ultra pure, high pitch vanilla bean, dried coconut finish that maintains excellent sweet/dry balance. Creamy soda and bounty bar aftertaste. A gorgeous, one of a kind, melt in your mouth malt that's a must try. 45% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Now a hugely welcome part of the core range, this whisky—made in Coffey stills at the Miyagikyo distillery—uses 100% malted barley as its base. The nose is all tinned peach, tropical fruit juice, and baked banana, with a surprising green celery note, coconut, and sherbet. The palate is silky, with some chocolate, biscuity oak, and orange blossom honey. Water brings those green notes forward to add freshness to the peach cobbler sweetness. The grain revolution builds. 45% Alc./Vol.

Nikka Coffey Grain Japanese Whisky (700ml)JAPANReduced from $134.99$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 45%Jim Murray's Japanese Whisky of the Year for 2023.
Grain whiskies are almost entirely reserved for the blended whisky market, where the grain component can be thought of as the 'neutral canvas' background. The more robust and flavourful Single Malts represent the colours in the blender's palate. Grain whiskies aren't necessarily bland, but they do tend towards lighter, leaner styles. This is because the raw materials and the equipment used to make grain whisky are different than those found in the production of single malt. In grains, usually unmalted wheat or maize (corn) feature, together with a small amount of 'green' malt (barley which has germinated but not been kilned). Usually about 16% malt is added in order to convert the starches in the other cereals into sugar, so it can be turned into alcohol by the yeast. The distillation process further sets grain whiskies apart: Rather than being pot distilled, they’re produced via column stills. Also known as 'Continuous' or 'Coffey Stills', this revolutionary invention from a French born, Irish raised Dublin Excise Officer, Aeneas Coffey, has forever changed the way most spirits are made. Significantly more efficient than the Pot still, column stills can produce a consistently light bodied and clean spirit to a pre-determined strength.
While the category is rarely marketed, there are several outstanding grain whiskies that are worth seeking out. Nikka's is one, and all the more unusual for being Japanese. Nikka have released a number of single cask Coffey distilled grain whiskies over the last few years. This is a larger scale offering, produced mainly from corn using their continuous Scottish-made Coffey stills at Miyagikyo. Tasted from a 40ml sample, the whisky yields superb scents of vanilla cream combined with hints of ripe pear or dried banana. Second pass finds tea biscuits and shortbread with the creaminess maintained. Silky, almost oily delivery offers semi-sweet Irish pot still-like flavours: vanilla wafer, muesli, then added pepper to finish. Concludes sufficiently fresh, caramelly, vanilla-heavy with shortbread and lingering sugars in the aftertaste. Irish whiskey meets Venezuelan rum. Delicious. 45% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews… I'll just repeat about the finish exactly what I wrote last year... because nothing has changed: it is identical... every year I look at the latest bottling of this astonishing grain, searching for a weakness here, a failing there. But no. Guaranteed consistency: it is like a song you know the words to and can sing along with. I has always linked silk with China... until I found this whisky all those years back. And it is as soft and luxurious now as it has ever been. Wonderful! 95.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2023

...Sweet, with subtle, crisp, nutty oak, then comes fudge, ripe banana, and peach. The overall effect is like eating vanilla ice cream with toffee fudge and hazelnut sprinkles. The structure is thick and physical, the palate sweet and quite fat, with light hints of raspberry, fruit salad. A jag of acidity freshens the delivery on the finish. With water there’s more toffee, and it becomes slightly more yielding, with less oak. For me the gold standard of grain. 92 points - whiskyadvocate.com (Fall 2015) Reviewed by: Dave Broom

"This is not "Japanese Bourbon" or even "Japanese Corn Whiskey." This is quite something...else. There is no age statement, but the benchmark for this whisky is 8-12 years. Ken Gargett – WinePilot.comSo fine, so silky, so effortless in delivery with aromatics that define what Watervale Riesling is all about. Watervale can be perceived as quiet. It is, in fact, beautifully subtle, detailed in style. Aromas of lime, lemongrass, kaffir lime with just a touch of ginger nicely define the sub-regional – and regional – style. The palate boasts a long line of flavour, super intense in lime, with herbals, fennel and ginger. Texturally, it’s supple. Acidity-wise, it is lemony bright and the mainstay of the wine, but don’t read into this that it is hard-edged. It’s not. Great length makes the flavour last. What a glorious expression of Clare Valley Shiraz. It’s a wine that speaks of the land and the soil, of Aussie bush notes and earth, of bramble, blackcurrant, black cherry, peppercorns, liquorice, sage and warm clove oak. And that’s just the wealth of aromas that explode in the glass after pouring. Boasts plenty of class all round, naturally fine featured, well integrated. The 14.5% alcohol might suggest a high degree of richness and weight, but it’s deceptive. The Shiraz remains well within medium bodied territory in red plums, black cherry, bush notes and earth boasting an overall fineness. Tannin management, I would suggest, is the key here, bringing structure and suppleness. The result is a perfect balance. This can only be a plus as it ages . . . and it most certainly will age well. And look at that price! Outstanding value here. Drink 2024-2032.

Coffee grounds, mocha, licorice and chocolate-dipped raspberries build interest and an engaging momentum as fine spices frame the package beautifully. What stands out to me, however, is the dense and generous presentation yet there is an even tempo and fluidity. The 2022 label has been updated to represent a new shade of olive green that reflects the olive notes in this wine and a hallmark of O'Leary Walker Clare Valley Shiraz. Damn it's tasty stuff. Don't walk, run.

A well-balanced and distinctly varietal and regional red of plush texture, dark cherry and mocha notes, green olive, clove oak, salt bush and gum leaf notes rippling through the bouquet and palate. A lick of graphite minerality a pleasing detail, so too the fine, al dente tannins that shape the wine and finish things fresh and bright. Fine wine. Drink by 2038.

Old Pulteney Stroma Malt Whisky Liqueur (500ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 35%Hailing from the far North East of Scotland, off the Caithness coast, Stroma Malt Whisky Liqueur takes its name from the windswept Caithness Isle. Stroma originates from the Norse meaning ‘island in the stream’ which also refers to the dangerous currents on the island’s shores, including the infamous ‘Swilkie’ whirlpool.
Tasting note: Viscous bright amber / polished copper colour. Hints of whisky and matchbook evident in the initial stages, sweetening to reveal aromas of honey, sponge cake and sweet spice. Creamy, honeyed-malt delivery is also pleasingly spicy; finish is sweet but not cloying and reveals more of the whisky. Well composed. Serve neat or over ice. 35% Alc./Vol.

Old Pulteney 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLANDReduced from $89.99$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 40%"yesss! Spot on Pulteney character with the malt bristling the taste buds..." 91 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible.
Suitably marketed as 'The Maritime Malt’, Pulteney’s sweet and fruity style comes with a lick of salt and sea air. It's one of a small number of coastal distilleries turning out a very distinctive style, further distinguished by its extreme northern location. Owned by a relatively small company without the promotional muscle of the major players, many whisky enthusiasts only 'discovered' Pulteney after Jim Murray named the now discontinued 21 year old World Whisky of the Year, (replaced by the superb 18YO). Choose any age statement and Pulteney promises a solid northerner, frequently matured in x Bourbon where you get the best feel for the distillate, but also suited to sherry when handled with care. Apart from the notable saline character, we often find hints of beeswax and light smoke that give it a Clynelish-like feel.
Established in 1826, for a long time the distillery was only accessible by sea. Barley was brought in by boat, the whisky shipped out and many of the distillery workers were also employed as fishermen. The herring fishing industry is no longer part of daily life in Wick, but the heritage of the region is referenced in the packaging of Old Pulteney, the labels incorporating the depiction of a traditional Wick herring drifter.
The twelve year old presents a pale gold colour in the glass and a minor sulphur note is evident beneath the light, salty, peppery malt that leaves one with an overall impression similar to fino or manzanilla sherry; it sweetens slightly with aeration releasing hints of fruit. The medium dry, biscuity palate has a pleasantly spicy burst - over all, dry and saline. The finish is crisp and fresh with delicate bready notes followed by a late coastal tang. In the spectrum of single malts, this belongs at the aperitif end, and is all the more refreshing for its individuality. 40% Alc./Vol. [2007 batch tasted].
Other reviews... Remarkably consistent.... The salt continues to ensure lustre, though this bottling has a little extra - and welcome - barley gristiness. 91 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2022
...The only survivor from Old Pulteney’s core range shake-up of 2018, this has been matured in first and second-fill bourbon casks. The nose is delicate, with almonds, honey, and floral notes. Sam Kim - Wine Orbit - Papalin Haiti 4 Year Old Vatted Rum (700ml)HAITI$159. 99Bottle$1919.88 DozenABV: 53.1%
Conceived by Velier's Luca Gargano, the Papalin project is dedicated to Caribbean styles of yesteryear, though specifically to rums of the late 1800s when Jamaican traders began to create blends from different distilleries. Myers’s and John Wray Nephew are two famous historical examples. In addition to exporting rums to Europe, they also produced their own blends, never specifying their origins. In the last seventy years an increasing number of European brands surfaced, then in the 1970s, distilleries began selling their own products. In light of all these changes, Papalin marks a return to the ancient tradition of rum blending, now with a transparency that will be welcomed by rum purists.
The label's first release was dedicated to Jamaica. The spotlight now shifts to Haiti, with a rum distilled from sugar cane juice, sourced from five different distilleries: Sajous, Vaval, Casimir, Distillerie de Port-au-Prince and Le Rocher. A total of 32 selected casks made the cut, all entirely aged in the tropical climate, with maturations taking place in ex-cognac, ex-bourbon and ex-whisky barrels. Technically, this is classified as a vatted rum. It's considered a versatile, accessible introduction to Clairin. 6000 bottles are available globally, and despite being young, its intriguing character has surprised many seasoned tasters. 53.1% Alc./Vol.

The 2022 was minute quantities, a single barrel, maybe not quite that after personal consumption and samples went out – this 2023 release, from a cooler year, was more abundant, though limited by the bush vine vineyard planting likewise. To the end of the 2023 season the vines were farmed organically. It spent 21 days on skins.
It’s got the right mojo. Tension of fine, granitic tannin, a sour-tart cherry fruit spectrum, a sense of botanical/amaro-like pleasing bitterness, a chinotto like strand through the wine. It’s sappy and got some crunch, decidedly savoury, a touch into the pleasing medicinal spectrum almost with a wash of bergamot and black tea characters. It feels just about all about fruit character and quality. So refreshing, medium weight more or less, plenty of a sense of complexity. This is my kind of drinking, but should please a legion of grenache-ophiles in tandem. Drink 2024-2030.

The vineyards which provided the fruit for this terrific McLaren Vale Cabernet include the Klavenick vineyard and, perhaps more interestingly, the Picnic Ground vineyard. The Picnic Ground vineyard was once owned by Thomas Hardy and was named after the picnics the family held there. The individual parcels for this wine were all fermented and matured, in older French oak, for fifteen months. Dark purple, the nose exhibits notes of plums, mocha, bay leaves, warm earth, dry herbs, mulberries and cigar boxes – lots of complexity here. This is a burly, firm style. A warm climate Cab with excellent length and firm, earthy tannins. This will be better in two years and then has a long life ahead of it, at least a good ten to twelve years, if necessary. Besides making one of Margaret River's best Chardonnay, Mike also produced the first Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blend in Australia.
Fermented in French barriques, the wine goes through a full malolactic fermentation which helps achieve superior texture, mouth feel and a more refined, persistent flavour. Lees are stirred fortnightly by hand in barrel over a period of 12 months.

This will sit alongside anything Peterkin has made in more than four decades as one of the finest winemakers in the region. It is a cracking good wine delivered with precision and power with a degree of delicacy and finesse that makes it so appealing. RayJordanWine.com.auPierro Chardonnay be what Pierro Chardonnay be. But there’s a smidgen more finesse in this year’s release and, combined with Pierre’s trademark fruit power, the effect is quite the sensational. Pierro is one of the original (as in, it was the first) close-planted blocks in Margaret River, at 6000 vines per hectare.
Power up front; finesse through the finish. This makes well and truly sure that it has your attention and then it shows that it has both depth, and style. Pears, yellow peaches, grilled nuts and a creamy, smoky, nougat character. There’s an element of quartz to this wine, or of something stony, and it’s a part of its glory. This is a noted wine in noteworthy form. It finishes long. It’s compelling throughout. Drink 2025-2032+

Ray Jordan – WinePilot.comIf there is a more reliable wine, which can provide better value than this one, anywhere in Australia, please let me know. Sourced half from estate vineyards and half from growers throughout the Clare Valley, this is the 40th consecutive release of this wine, a fine achievement. Free run juice only and then three months post fermentation on lees. A pale yellow hue, the nose exhibits typical lemon/lime aromas, with florals, grapefruit pith, river stones and oystershells. A classic Clare Riesling, everything is in place. It offers a gentle balance, with fresh acidity and impressive length. A wine which will easily see ten to fifteen years in a good cellar (I’d be prepared to put money that every single previous release, from the time they started using screwcaps more than twenty years ago, would still be drinking well – these things will rival the Californian redwoods for longevity). While the Traditionale is regularly one of the very best in its price bracket (and often well above it), The Merle never fails to sit among the very best releases of Clare Riesling, year after year, no matter what price bracket you quote. For me, this is one of our iconic Rieslings. The colour for this latest release is a near transparent lemon. The wine is elegant and refined, fresh and focused and offers drive, impeccable balance and endless length. A line of sea breeze acidity runs the length, the intensity never drops for a moment, and that freshness is still evident throughout. It's a supreme exercise in precision and highlights the gift that the Clare Valley subregion of Polish Hill River is to the production of this fabulous variety.
Only made in exceptional years, specific parcels were selected and it was made exactly the same as the Traditionale Riesling.
Limes, lime leaf and green apple feature large but carry themselves with fabulous humility. Lemongrass and grapefruit add detail with a river stone minerality that threads its way through the frame. Pretty white field flowers offer a fresh and vibrant aroma that calls you back time and gain.

I like this wine in its youth, and I like it as an older wine as well. It's very smart and eloquently of place. 11.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2025-2044

2016 Pol Roger Vintage ChampagneChampagne, FRANCEReduced from $175.00$160. 00Bottle$1920.00 DozenCellar: Drink now - 8 Years (2023-2031)ABV: 12.5%Closure: Diam CorkPol Roger’s 2016 vintage Champagne is made from the traditional house vintage blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay sourced from 20 Grands and Premiers crus vineyards in the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs regions.
Possessing great length and a graceful, airy like feel, this is a wonderfully complex and finessed Champagne.
A fine, satiny mousse slowly subsides to reveal a pale straw coloured base that has pale gold tinged edges with a generous and very fine bead flowing through to the surface. On the nose leading the way in classic Pol Roger style are aromatics of yeast lees and brioche followed by some citrus, cashew, subtle dried honey and faint oily toast like notes. Rich and creamy textured yet wonderfully light and airy across the palate. A sophisticated flavour profile of baked bread, yeast lees, delicate cashew, citrusy honeyed like characters, ginger, chalk and oily toast elements extend through to a very long and pillowy finish that’s beautifully sculptured by mouth watering acidity.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

A very elegant and silky vintage Champagne with a seamless harmony of candied citrus fruit, sushi ginger and dried cherry character with racy acidity and delicate minerality at the long, straight and refined finish. You don’t even think about how much or little dosage this has. Drink or hold.

JamesSuckling.comBased on 60% Pinot Noir and the rest Chardonnay, the 2016 Champagne Vintage Brut is released only after 6-7 years on the lees (sur latte). It pours a straw hue and displays a more expressive profile on opening, with notes of tangerine and fresh flowers, its red fruit coming through with fresh red raspberry and peppery spice. It’s medium-bodied and rounded through the palate, with excellent structure, powerful concentration, and a long finish. This has a refined yet powerful feel and will be a wine with significant longevity and slow maturation over the next 15-20 years. True to the house style, it has a sturdy backbone and is emblematic of a fantastic vintage champagne from Pol Roger. The mousse is pinpoint and rounded on the finish. Drink 2024-2040.

Port Askaig 100 Proof Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Islay, SCOTLANDReduced from $150.00$139. 99Bottle$1679.88 DozenABV: 57.1%Jim Murray's 2017 Runner up for Best No Age Statement Whisky of the year (Multiple casks). 96.5 points.
We first tasted whiskies under the Port Askaig label several years ago and found them to be immensely appealing. These fruity-smokey styles are sourced from an "unknown Islay distillery" (word is that it's Caol Ila) and bottled by Specialty Drinks Ltd., also responsible for the "Elements of Islay" range. Port Askaig's 100 proof edition was launched in 2015 and has now been discontinued globally. "100° Proof" equates to 57.1% in the traditional system of alcohol measurement, different to the 100 proof you're more likely to see on American whiskeys.
As there's no distillery called Port Askaig, this dram has been named after the ancient ferry port and fishing harbour situated on the east coast of Islay. The whisky was matured in refill ex-bourbon casks and bottled without an age statement, though the youngest component is reported to be seven years old. The rest will be considerably older. The nose offers a classic Islay sniff: a sultry amalgam of smoke-infused brine and pepper combined with baked citrus and latent creamy vanillas. What sets this apart is the oily, mouth coating delivery, the peat perfectly tuned with the thick malt, then viscous and saline to finish, the oils oozing sooty peat with hints of cured meats and late jaffa in the aftertaste. Near 60% but you'd never know it. Of all the Port Askaigs we've tasted since, this remains the pick of the bunch and comes with the highest recommendation. Buy one to drink and another to collect. 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... what perfect oak must have been deployed here. No off notes or buzz. Just the insistent and steadying hand of vanilla / butterscotch to add a gentle counter to the spice and smoke. ; just exemplary, high quality Islay; a must experience malt. If you find a more beautifully paced, weighted and elegant Islay this year, I'd really like to hear about it." 96.5 points - Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2018
Very enjoyable, and definitely great value for money. The finish falls off a little, and it's not overly complex, but if you dig these flavours (like I do), it's definitely a winner! Pure, unadulterated Caol Ila, but nicely amplified and concentrated over the regular official bottlings. Lovely. I must admit I sometimes shy away from independent and/or mystery bottlings that I'm not familiar with, but there's no reason to do so in this case. These guys clearly know what they're doing. If you're a fan of Caol Ila but you wish they'd turn up the volume, or you've had your fill of the standard bottlings, this is a sure-fire way to satisfy that desire.

Dave Brookes – James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion - 2019 Providence Ex-Caroni Casks 3 Year Old Haitian Pure Single Rum (700ml)HAITI$189. 99Bottle$2279.88 DozenABV: 52%
Reported to be a collaboration between the Linge family of Berling, direct descendants of a famous Haitian rum dynasty (Barbancourt), and La Maison & Velier, Providence represents the first aged rum of the Distillerie de Port-au-Prince. Based on traditional methods, it's produced using syrup from an ancestral Cristalline sugar cane variety from the fields of Michel Sajous, located in Saint-Michel de l’Attalaye, 150 kilometers north of the capital. Fermentation is carried out using selected yeasts and dunder from previous distillations, allowing for the development of impressive aromatic complexity. The must obtained after fermentation is distilled in two stages in a copper still, heated in a bain-marie, designed by German boilermaker Muller. The final distillate was matured exclusively in ex-Caroni rum casks for three years and then reduced to 52% before bottling. Summed up as "exotic and expressive" and declared "Robot free" on the label.
Other reviews... This was the odd one out and also a huge surprise. Considering the price tag you get a lot for your money. I found out that it needed to rest for at least 15 minutes and at 30 minutes the flavours just come at you. Intense and fruity with nice spices and cane. I really like the floral note from nose to finish and even the empty glass was wonderful after a while. - Kevin Sorensen, Rum-x.com
Notes from the producers... Nose: Rich and concentrated. Camphor, powdery, mimosa, cane sugar, vanilla, lime blossom and flambeed banana. Palate: Lively and distinguished. Fresh cane juice, lemon, resin, roasted pineapple, ginger and cinnamon. Finish: Long and silky. Rose petals, oriental notes, pastry cream, praline, tobacco, coffee and medicinal notes.

Redbreast 12 Year Old Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey (700ml)County Cork, IRELANDReduced from $139.99$109. 99Bottle$1319.88 DozenABV: 40%This is the world's best whiskey! Drinkstrade.com.au have reported that Redbreast 12 Year Old has won the World Whiskey Trophy at the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) 2019. The competition awarded Redbreast 12 an impressive 98 points, narrowly beating other competitors from Australia, South Africa, Denmark, India, Taiwan and Switzerland, among many others.
The judges said: “It starts with a gorgeous nose, a fantastic composition of aromas all complementing each other. Think of roasted coffee, toffee apples, malt and warm Christmas spices. The palate is bold but very elegant with a nice balance and all in order to a great finale with dried fruits, candied oranges and sweet spices.”
For decades, serious whiskey drinkers drank Irish "blended" whiskey, mixing it with cola or adding a dash to coffee. But, John Hansell, editor and publisher of Malt Advocate magazine, says that's changing. "The line between Irish whiskey and Scotch whisky has become blurred," says Hansell, since Irish whiskey companies like Bushmills and Jameson have expanded their range to include deluxe whiskies from aged blends to pure pot stills and their own brand of single malts. "The top Irish whiskeys are just as good as many single-malt scotches. It's too bad more people aren't aware of how complex some of these whiskeys have become."
Here's a case in point. From Irish Distillers Ltd, Redbreast is a 'Single' unblended, pure pot still Irish whiskey made with malted and unmalted barley which has been triple distilled. Our tasting found powerful, sensuous aromatics, at first reminiscent of creaming soda then vanilla wafer and sweet cereals enter giving this a Bourbon slant. The entry is soft and light. Mid palate turns deliciously creamy with semi-sweet, toasty cereals and brandy cream sauce flavours superbly counterpointed by spicy, drying oak. Finishes crisp and dry with terrific length as the vanilla wafer biscuit again emerges followed by a late creme-caramel fade. An Irish with soul and distinctive style, this also offers a mouthfeel that’s uncommon. Its lightness of body combined with depth of flavour make for a terrific aperitif. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews...Very elegant, complex, and stylish. Honeyed and silky in texture, with toffee, toasted marshmallow, nougat, maple syrup, banana bread, and a hint of toasted coconut. Bright fruit and golden raisin blend in nicely with the layers of sweetness. Impeccable balance and very approachable. Classic Irish whiskey! (Value Pick) 96 points

Redbreast 15 Year Old Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey (700ml)County Cork, IRELANDReduced from $199.00$159. 99Bottle$1919.88 DozenABV: 46%"...what we have here is a truly great Irish whiskey and my pulse races in the certain knowledge it can get better still..." 94 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2017
Besides Midleton and Greenspot, Redbreast is one of the last surviving true Irish pot still whiskeys, triple distilled from a mix of malted barley and unmalted grains. In 2007, Irish Distillers produced a one-off 15 year old to celebrate the 50th anniversary of French retailer, La Maison Du Whisky. Such was its reception that it was decided to continue it alongside the regular 12 year old as a core product. Delivering more sherry input and with zero chill filtration, it is one of the most textural and buxom Irish we’ve tasted. The entrancing bouquet is spicy, creamy-yet-fresh, all at the same time. The palate turns oily, pithy then more cocoa-like with a cascade of sweets suggested, ranging through dark chocolate to vanilla wafer and toasted marshmallow. Oak adds balancing grip, while the overall persistence is sustained by oils through the aftertaste. Equally an Irish to savour with water which brings another dimension highlighting fruits on the nose (fig, orange oils) as well as in the mouth. Almost like two whiskies in one. Superb. 46% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Redbreast 12 year old is a classic pure pot still Irish whiskey; where can you go from there? This new 15 year old expression is more muscular (bottling at 46% and not chill filtering certainly helps), but there are trade-offs. It’s a bit closed on the nose (like a great Bordeaux wine that’s too young). I do enjoy the silky/oily texture, the bold resinous oak spice grip on the finish, and the rich nutty toffee, fig, black raspberry, chocolaty, chewy nougat throughout the palate. Still, it’s not as eminently drinkable, refined, or balanced as the 12 year old. 92 points- www.maltadvocate.com, (Vol. 19, #4) Reviewed by: John Hansell

From 2002 to 2011 he was the winemaker at Mount Mary, it wasn’t until 2014 that he took the leap and began his own operation.
2024 was excellent year in the Yarra Valley, after a wet spring, summer came good with slow ripening days, resulting in lovely aromatics and wonderful intensity. This Pinot Noir was sourced from five vineyards – Harriet’s, Full Moon, Boat O’Craigo, Nenagh Park and Yarrawalla with only 10% of the Harriet’s component being whole bunch. Maturation was predominantly in seasoned hogheads and puncheons (300 & 500L).Rich, powerful and expansive Yarra Valley Pinot that over delivers.
Semi translucent dark red core with black shaded edges and a light red hue. Exhibiting a perfumed like intensity, the nose is engulfed with dark cherry, violet, strawberry and subtle rhubarb scents. Anise, brambly dried herb, forest floor and spice notes also chime in to lend further interest. Expansive, concentrated and supplely textured, rich dark cherry and strawberry fruits unfold across the palate with terrific power. Extending through the back half are complexing notions of subtle rhubarb, traces of anise, brambly cedar, dried herbs, delicate forest floor and spice. Velvet smooth tannins impart a silken feel which carries right through to a long, incredibly moreish finish. This is Rob Hall in top form.

Ron Zacapa Centenario X.O. Rum (700ml)Mixco, GUATEMALAReduced from $240.00$159. 99Bottle$1919.88 DozenABV: 40%The crown jewel in the Zacapa line-up and the epitome of elegance in rum.
What started in the early part of the 20th century as an effort by a handful of enthusiastic entrepreneurs has evolved into a prosperous corporation with international recognition. Today the 'La Nacional' company has an extensive range of products which account for 98% of the domestic spirits market in Guatemala. Their rums marketed under the Ron Zacapa label stand out for two reasons: Instead of molasses, they're produced using sugarcane honey (fresh sugarcane juice condensed and filtered). Secondly, the rums are distilled at sea-level but aged in the town of Quetzaltenango at an elevation of 2300 metres.
Zacapa's top shelf blend of 6-25 year old rums is an exemplary example of the spirit that goes through a similar solera aging process to the popular Solera 23 with one notable exception: after a spell in ex-bourbon, ex-oloroso sherry, and ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry casks, the final blend is finished in French oak casks previously used to age cognac (befitting of the XO moniker, but relatively meaningless in the rum world). It feels like a very old cognac or brandy on the nose with an almost ethereal lift of sticky date, dark chocolate, coffee bean and light golden syrup. The palate delights the senses with a fabulous rush of dates, molasses cake, mocha, honey, super-aged muscat and perfectly balanced spirit. The finish is drying and XO cognac-like. Tasting like a good proportion of seriously old material is in the mix, this is the epitome of elegance in rum with luxe presentation to match. 40% Alc./Vol.

...This rum is a gorgeous, ruddy toffee color, perhaps a shade more amber than the standard 23. The nose, unsurprisingly, evokes more age, as well, with deeper notes of aged wine and seasoned oak that pair well with elements of dried fig, sticky prune, dark roast coffee, and creamy milk chocolate. The palate is still bright with all that citrusy, sherry-driven fruit, although a rich layer of dark brown sugar underpins things, adding a silky depth and gentle complexity. Coffee notes, nutty and lightly spiced, dominate the mid-palate before a reprisal of fruit on the long finish, this time more Cognac-driven with golden stone fruits and some poached pear. All told, it’s only a bit more impressive than the standard Zacapa 23, but that’s still saying something. A great special occasion sipping rum. If you can spare the shelf space. - drinkhacker.com

Royal Brackla Oloroso Sherry Cask Finish 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLANDReduced from $150.00$134. 99Bottle$1619.88 DozenABV: 46%Upping the value in the Sherry-matured stakes. "Excellent" - whiskyfun.com
As part of its program to make single malts available from all five of its distilleries, Bacardi subsidiary, John Dewar & Sons has been releasing a bunch of Brackla age statements since 2015. With a house style that's pedestrian and fruity, this edition offers something unexpected in the form of an Oloroso sherry cask finish. Even more importantly, it's bottled at 46% without chill filtration (the regular stuff weighs in at 40%). Here's just one of many positive customer comments about this whisky online: "... it blows away anything I've tasted from Macallan and at higher cost...probably shouldn't say all this as it might go up in price..."
Give Brackla twenty minutes to breathe and you'll definitely find similarities to Macallan Sherry Oak 12, or even Glengoyne 18YO, but it delivers more concentration and mouthfeel due to a higher abv and zero-filtration. The flavour focus falls firmly on fruity-nutty Oloroso, so less American oak intrudes to dumb-down the experience. Allspice and cocoa are capped off by tantalising suggestions of dry Guyanese rum, while the overall balance is near perfect. A hidden gem from an obscure distillery beckons...

Other reviews... Nutty on the nose, with peanut brittle, then buttered pecan and vanilla-almond ice creams. There are nice fruity notes as well, like baked red apples and Bosc pears, plus cinnamon, fresh challah, orange peel, and dried leaves. Creamy and smooth on the palate, with melted milk chocolate, tiramisu, crème brûlée, and light pepper spice. Espresso and cream highlight a lengthy and excellent finish. 91 points - whiskyadvocate.com
...Apparently and unless I'm wrong once more, this is the new-new label, even more retro than before. This baby was finished in oloroso wood while the presentation tube would make it clear that it should display 'spice, cherries and demerara'. I believe the mistake they did with the previous rendition (round blue label) was to bottle it at 40% vol. Colour: amber. Nose: and voilà, butterscotch, praline, roasted chestnuts, chocolate (creamy Lindt's), nougat and cappuccino. No one can be against this, even if this smart treatment may have erased a part of the Distillery character. I do find gooseberries in the background, having said that. Mouth: I could copy-and-paste what I have jotted down about the nose. Milk chocolate, roasted nuts, marmalade, toffee… St. Oloroso, pray for us. Finish: rather long, very good. Coffee drops and, there, since I'm in a good mood, Demerara sugar. Seriously, Demerara sugar. Comments: amen. Excellent. 86 points - whiskyfun.com

Royal Lochnagar 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$109. 99Bottle$1319.88 DozenABV: 40%"...projects a delightful richness unique to Royal Lochnagar. " - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible
From the smallest member of Diageo’s roughly thirty strong distillery portfolio. We've always enjoyed the lightness and freshness that comes with this bottling, which is not without a touch of honey. It's slow fermented and the distillation is the same, maximising copper contact and producing a new make that's fruity and grassy and well suited to sherry casks. A fresh pour opens with suggestions of cheesecake, granita biscuits, straw bale and poached pears on the nose, following in a light to medium bodied, well-rounded malt; Mid palate candied fruitiness arrives with a honeyed glaze while the finish turns mildly grassy. The final stages are gently spicy, crisp and appley. When you need a dram that's soft and a little sweet - think Highland Park, less the peat. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews… Superb! A sharp, copper-rich aroma going on heavy esters. The malt forms a lovely outer shield.... a succulent, salivating delivery, soft on arrival with the barley and light caramels melting first...pleasant farewell of vanilla, toffee, light ulmo honey... for the first time in some little while I have found an intense dram true to its traditional style. 93 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2023
...Nose: Fruitcake. Faint burnt currants. Palate: Cakey, sherryish, sultanas with a malty, grassy, sweetness. Finish: Peatier than I remember but becomes rich and spicy. Comment: Complex, beautifully rounded and soothing. 40% Alc./Vol. Rating: 8/10 - www.whiskymag.com
The area in the North of the River Dee was one of the most popular places for illicit ‘moonshine’ distilleries. In 1826, after the introduction of the Excise Act, one operator by the name of James Robertson applied for a licence to produce legally. Other ‘moonshine’ distillers considered him a traitor and set fire to his business. Determined, Robertson constructed another distillery, naming it “Lochnagar” after a nearby mountain. When this venture also burnt to the ground in 1841, Robertson too abandoned the whisky world. Four years later, John Begg built a distillery South of the Dee, close to Balmoral castle (the summer residence of the Royal family). He named it “New Lochnagar”. When the distillery became operational, Begg wrote a letter to the private secretary of the royal family, inviting their Royal Highnesses to experience the delights of the distillery. The very next day, both Prince Albert and his wife, Queen Victoria paid an impromtu call and were impressed enough to allow Begg to rename the distillery 'Royal Lochnagar', making him official supplier to the court. The Royal connection had an immediate effect on the sales and the price of the whisky. It has also seen the distillery play host to a string of famous visitors, many of them British prime ministers taking an hour or so off between meetings with the monarch of the day at Balmoral. Completely renewed in 1967, Royal Lochnagar today preserves its traditional, iconic character with an approach to whisky manufacture that is thoroughly hands-on and artisanal. Fermentation times are long, ensuring that every last morsel of character is extracted from the mash, and the distillery's short, stubby stills maximise the broad flavour spectrum. The distillery uses a mix of third-fill Sherry butts and third-fill American Oak hogsheads. The result is one of the fruitiest, richest Single Malts on the market. Traditionally nearly all the malt production from Lochnager was used in the famous VAT 69 blend. Today the majority is bottled as single malt.
