Nicolas Catena has been instrumental in Argentina’s progress over the last three decades, bringing the country's wine industry into line with world class standards. What you can now get for your money in the present day climate are seriously good expressions of the nation's signature varietal, Malbec, that rival many Australian reds for punch and price. Made by fourth generation vintner Laura Catena and chief winemaker, Alejandro Vigil, this wine is sourced from three high altitude vineyards. Each vineyard is specifically farmed in preparation for its role in the final blend. Eighty year old vines in the Lunlunta (Maipù) vineyard lend soft, sweet texture whilst the intense sunshine in the Gualtallary (Tupungato) vineyard provides explosive floral aromatics and a concentrated structure. The last component is from El Cipillo in Eugenio Bustos, which has loamy sands and thick calcareous layers sit over rounded rock. Maturation takes place in a mix of new, second and third use French oak barrels for a period of 11-13 months.
2022 was an exceptional year from every possible qualitative standpoint. Winemaker Alejandro Vigil stating: “This is the best year that I have lived through”.

Juicy, supple and sleek, this is one moreish Malbec.

Midnight black heart with a vibrant dark red purple hue. Fragrant scents of violet, red currant, blueberry and red liquorice delight the olfactory senses with some complimenting dried herb, vanillin cedar and spicy earth notes ensuing. Rich dark cherry, blueberry and red liquorice fruits infused with dried herbs are layered across the mid weighted palate with great polish and refinement. Flashing across the back half are spicy vanillin cedar and delicate earth accents. Possessing excellent freshness, a supple feel and sleek tannins, it has a long juicy red to blue fruited conclusion that makes for moreish drinking.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

The 2022 Malbec originates from the Uco Valley and is a blend of various regions and winemaking techniques. Purple in hue. The nose reveals enticing notes ranging from crushed plums to violets atop a faintly herbal backdrop. Indulgent and juicy, the plush texture and refreshing flow lead to a rich and satisfyingly long-lasting palate. This wine is built upon different components that come together to achieve a relatively complex flavor. Drink 2023-2032.

For 124 years, five generations of the Bujanda family have produced some of the finest wines from Rioja. It was Joaquín Martínez Bujanda who started the company with 10 hectares of vines in Rioja Alavasa and over the years the estate has expanded to include vineyards across the region.
A blend of 85% Tempranillo, 7% Mazuelo, 6% Graciano and 2% Garnacha aged for 30 months in a mixture of French (70%) and American (30%) oak barrels. Deep black dark red core with a dark red hue. Pronounced liquorice, dark raspberry and black cherry aromas are interwoven with vanillin oak, earthy mocha, leather and spice notes. 2022 Dalrymple Vineyards Mt. Lord Pinot Noir

Boasting superb richness, power and a supple feel, this is superb expression of Tassie Pinot that draws comparisons with top end Burgundy.

The crown jewel in the Dalrymple collection, the Mt. Lord Vineyard is located on a small, angular and varied landscape that lays on the protected easterly slope of the Pontos Hills. The vineyard rows run up the hillside from 134m to 156m above sea level, precariously positioned between a rock ledge below and steep barren hillside above.
The fruit was handpicked with a small amount of the bunches placed directly into the ferment. Maturation took place in French oak barriques (30% new) for a period of 10 months.

Deep dark red core with black tinged edges and a dark red hue. Intense spicy dark cherry, rhubarb, dried herb and bramble scents sail through the nostrils with some forest floor, subtle strawberry and cedar notes also making an appearance. Rich, concentrated and supple in its flow across the palate, it shows fabulous power and expansive volume. Dark cherry, strawberry and rhubarb flavours infused with dried herbs are further complexed by notions of brambly cedar, forest floor and spice. Velvety tannins seamlessly integrate into the very long, complex and highly savoury conclusion.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

A new offering from Dalrymple from the Mt Lord vineyard, purchased by Hill-Smith Family Vineyards in 2012. Bright ruby with lifted aromas of red cherry, red plum and raspberry pip. Notes of fine spice suffuse through the wine with hints of struck flint, raspberry coulis, powdered stone, wildflowers, gentle game tones and a distant whiff of leaf litter. Fine, lacy acidity provides energy and drive. Fruit ripe and pure, stretched in a canvas of fine, kinetic tannin, supple and finely detailed as it retreats. Drink by 2036.

I was fortunate to taste the only sample of this wine in the UK, and it is one of the most remarkable Tassie wines of my life.  Take all of the purity and expression we know and love from Tasmanian elite Pinot Noir, then concentrate it just a touch.  Darken the fruit, add a hint more muscle, spice and shantung silk textural mystery, along with a whisper of magical whole bunches and some rhapsodic French oak and the picture is complete.  Pete Caldwell captured the essence of this site in Polaroid perfection. Then, he made the near-impossible happen by transferring all of the energy and greatness of this fruit without squandering a drop of potential into the bottle.  I implore the lever-pullers at Hill-Smith Family Estate’s HQ to heave a few cases of this wine onto the next Dalrymple boat to the UK.  If this wine appeared next to various Clos de Vougeots, Bonnes-Mares and Chambertins this week, it would bring the house down!  Drink 2026 – 2035

Hand picked and fermented in open-tops, before 18 months maturation in French barriques, mostly used. Highly regional aromas of baking spices and dried fruits meld with a contemporary whiff of florals and blueberry, affirmed by a pulpy mid-palate, a grind of pepper and considerable energy driving the finish. A full-weighted wine of a crunchy levity, ensuring that nothing gets too sweet or out of hand. Very good drinking and exceptional value. Drink by 2027.

Domaine Clarendon is the ambitious project of Clarendon Hills winemaker Roman Bratasiuk and his son Alex. Planted in 2006 using Astralis cuttings the vineyard is dry grown with yields at less than 1 tonne per acre. The vineyards soil structure is solid rock (the vineyard cultivator broke two 'industrial-as' Caterpillar row rippers on rocks the size of houses) and it is located 315 metres above sea level - the highest altitude vineyard in Clarendon and also McLaren Vale.

A superb Syrah that boasts formidable concentration, power and structure.

Sourced directly from the winery this museum release delivers outstanding value when one considers the bottle age behind it and the fact that the current vintage (2020) is selling for $32.99. A no brainer buy if you like rich, robust reds.
Exceptional colour for a Syrah with 12 years bottle age behind it displaying an impenetrable inky black heart along with an equally deep dark red black hue. Engulfing the olfactory senses are potent aromas of ripe blackberry, liquorice and black cherry which intermix with some vanillin cedar, traces of dark chocolate and peppered earth notes. Boasting magnificent density, power and depth of fruit along with a firm structure, the bold, weighty palate is well and truly alive and kicking. Rich, opulent blackberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits are backed by muscular tannins which assert their presence, imparting a grippy feel onto the back half. Vanillin cedar, earth and blackpepper characters linger through the long, densely fruited yet robust finish.

Epsilon is the project of Aaron and Julie Southern (Julie is a member of the Kalleske clan) who own vineyards in the Northern part of Barossa. As the familiar story goes with so many growers they sold off their fruit to larger wineries until a chance meeting with the Massena boys Dan Standish and Jaysen Collins. Under their guidance they convinced them to start up their own brand in 2004 and build a winery on the property. Maturation takes place for approximately 12 months in new and seasoned French and American oak with only the best batches making the final blend.

Draped in rich, succulent, velvety fruit yet refined in it’s feel, this is one irresistible Barossa Shiraz.

Dense inky black heart with a deep bright dark red black hue. Heady dark plum, blackberry, liquorice and black cherry aromas waft out of the glass with some ensuing gently smoked vanillin cedar, fennel, hints of dark chocolate and spice lending further interest. Rich, plush and sumptuous the palate is drenched with succulent waves of dark plum, liquorice and black cherry fruits which are flanked by flashes of smoky vanillin cedar, earthy fennel characters and blackpepper. Fantastically concentrated and opulent it shows great underlying freshness and possesses velvet like tannins. Flooded with juicy dark to black fruit the long finish nonetheless maintains a refined feel.

After a high flying career in marketing Ingrid Groiss returned to her family origins, enrolling in viticulture, oenology and wine marketing at the University of Vienna. During those studies she gained experience with producers such as Domäne Wachau, Birgit Braunstein and Birgit Eichinger. She had to play second fiddle to her chief winemaker dad until in 2010 when she went head-to-head with him in a blind taste-off of their own wines, with the victor being handed the winemaker's reins. Needless to say Ingrid came out on top.

Flaxman’s Valley is a high altitude sub-region of the Eden Valley and one of our most highly regarded districts for growing great Riesling. Combine that with the stellar 2023 vintage and we are in for something special. Cold fermentation took place in refrigerated stainless steel tanks. A shining pale yellow colour. This is beautifully perfumed with talc, bath salts, lavender, florals and citrus, notably intense limes with fine balance and a lingering finish. Sourced from three high altitude Eden Valley blocks of varying aspects, winemaker Andrew Quin has produced a stunning Riesling that’s bursting with flavour. The 2023 vintage saw below average daytime temperatures and cool nights, ideal ripening conditions for Riesling, allowing for extended and gradual flavour accumulation. This resulted in wines that possess a combination of high natural acidity, intense flavours and amazing power.

A super scrumptious Eden Valley Riesling that delivers mouth watering flavours with terrific drive and force.

Deep dark red black colour with a dark red hue. Pronounced ripe black cherry and liquorice aromas are followed by vanillin cedar, earth, leather and spice notes. On the palate rich black cherry and liquorice fruits carry a ripe chewy feel with notions of vanillin oak, scorched earth, leather and spice lingering through the back half. Excellent concentration with a robust tannin structure leading into a deeply fruited, slightly grippy conclusion of admirable length.
Drink over the next 3-4 years.
    Alc. 14.26%

    Other Reviews….
A fine if youthful Rioja, naturally Tempranillo dominant. It is deep magenta in colour with a lovely focused nose exhibiting notes of cherries, herbs, raspberries and roast meats. Soft texture and of medium length, this is finely balanced with a slow, gentle fade. Attractive now and for the next three to four years. Worth seeking out. Drink 2022-2026.

    Bottle
    $2640.00 Dozen
    ABV: 58.2%

A double sherried Longmorn - first oloroso matured, then finished in a fresh PX hogshead. Sublime on the nose, the wine mingles naturally with Longmorn’s honeyed, toasted cereal tones, however the palate takes a more bittersweet turn, run through with peppered poached pears, fruit-filled bitter dark chocolates and late orange spice cake, tongue tingling heat rising into the aftertaste. Atypical Longmorn, very textural with quite the attack. 297 bottles at 58.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... The sister cask of the very popular Longmorn we bottled last year, this sophisticated Speyside whisky lends itself well to active cask maturation and that’s exactly what we have here. Matured for most of its life in a 2nd fill oloroso butt we then transferred it to a fresh ex-PX hogshead for 17 months adding sweetness and enhance the sherry character already present. Tasting revealed - Fruit Cake, cinnamon and walnut.

A fruit-forward nose offering some lovely dried pineapple, peach and cantaloupe character that's echoed in the the delivery. Medium sweet, silky, rounded and concentrated; chunks of succulent fruit and nectar are countered by gently warming spices and a fine-tuned tang. A bit like a Thai curry, where the fruitiness keeps popping up to check the heat. Effortless and delicious Mannochmore in a style that's seldom encountered. 283 bottles at 59.7% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... Located on the same site as Glenlossie, this not well known unassuming Speysider produces a rich fruit character that pairs perfectly with a cask with a strong ex-bourbon influence. that's exactly what we have here with a full maturation in a regular hogshead which had been coopered with very active fresh bourbon barrel cask ends. Tasting revealed - marmalade, Bakewell tart and golden syrup.

Firmly standing at the top of the tree of Australian Chardonnays, Leeuwin Estate have turned out yet another spectacular release from the 2021 vintage. Barrel fermented and matured in new French oak barriques with regular lees stirring for a period of 11 months.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a subtle tint of green around the edges and a watery hue. Captivating aromas of white peach, nectarine and dried honey delicately infused with gun flint engulf the nostrils. Biscuity oak, subtle cashew, citrusy nougat and spice notes add a further dimension of complexity. Beautifully shaped, expansive and refined the palate is layered with fleshy white peach and nectarine fruits which overlay a biscuity nougat, subtle dried honey, ginger spice, roast almond and gun flint back drop. Tremendously powerful yet relatively light on its feet it has a fresh silken like feel. Finishes with exceptional length and finesse.
Drink over the next 8-10 years.
    Alc. 13.5%

    Other Reviews…..
The 2021 Art Series Chardonnay leads with a distinctly floral nose: jasmine and white garden rose, wisteria and lemon blossom. The season was a challenging one in Margaret River, defined by the rainfall, which was constant. The temperatures were modest (not cool, as plenty of rain might suggest),and given that the region is so diverse in terms of distances between vineyard areas, this created quite a patchwork of outcomes for producers. On the palate, the wine is powerful and savory—it leans heavily on exotic dry spice and cracked honeycomb, with hints of salted butter on fresh white bread, beeswax and salted pink grapefruit. Stylistically, it is not dissimilar to the 2017; however, the dovetailing of acid and fruit feels seamless and well matched here. The wine is piercing and structural, tightly coiled and almost rigid, in the best of ways. It's an impressive wine, one that, at this stage of its life, is defined by its penetrating acid line. Sealed under screw cap.

There’s always an anticipation when a new vintage arrives. This doesn’t disappoint – it’s archetypal Art Series: powerful, rich and layered with flavour from stone fruit, pink grapefruit and Meyer lemon to a touch of mandarin. The palate builds with creamy lees, oak spice and some phenolics – the oak is superbly integrated, and pure acidity leads this to a persistent finish. Impressive as always. Drink by 2034.

Jane Faulkner – James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion

I seem to have missed tasting the 2020 LEAS Chardonnay, which is kind of disappointing. It’s a blip in my Leeuwin radar, given I’ve tasted every one of them on release since the 1992 vintage. Anyway, teeth gnashing aside, the bottle seems to be lighter these days, which is very good.
Pear, lime, grapefruit, floral too, with a distinct mint/aniseed top note, backed with discreet spicy cinnamon/ginger oak. It’s fresh and lively, quite saline too, flinty and chalky, a honey ginger drink character in the mix, along with a cucumber coolness and biscuit spices, a whole lot of presence and power here, delivered in a kind of understated, but confident way. The finish is very long, and refreshing. Gee, this is good wine. It ripples through the mouth like a flat white stone pitched across a cool lake. That’s an image for you, and I’ll leave you with that. Drink 2025-2040+

Extremely complex and classy on the nose with aromas of lemon peel, flint, nectarines, sea salt and minerals. The palate is tightly wound with high-tension acidity, generous mouthfeel and an underlying power, showing notes of lime curd, mandarin pith, orange blossoms, baking spices and gunsmoke. Very complete and made for the ages. Excellent. Drink or hold. Crown cap.

A delectable, fleshy textured blend layered with succulent fruit.

A homage to the Spanish wines of Priorat, merging very old bush vine Grenache (70%) and spicy dry grown Carignan (30%). The Grenache component coming off vines planted in the 1940’s. The two varieties were co-fermented with 19% whole bunch fruit included and maturation taking place in old French oak puncheons for a period of 6 months.
Deep dark red core with black tinged edges and a red to dark red hue. Aromas of dark raspberry, liquorice, plum and cherry stream through the nostrils followed by some provincial herb, scorched earth and subtle pepper notes. The delectable palate is layered with succulent dark raspberry, plum and cherry fruits. Notions of liquorice, scorched earth and peppered dried herbs the undercard. South Australian vineyard baron and wine mogul Warren Randall recently purchased this high profile McLaren Vale estate and with it he has undertaken a smart packaging revamp of the brand. Produced from a vineyard planted in 1991, this superb Shiraz was matured in French oak puncheons, of which 26% were new and the remaining 1-3 year old oak for a period of 15 months. Only the best barrels were selected for the final blend.

Plush, powerful and opulent, this is rich, sumptuous McLaren Vale Shiraz at its absolute best.

Impenetrable pitch black heart with a very deep dark red black hue. Soaring from the glass are heady ripe blackberry and liquorice scents which are complimented by some dark plum, gently toasted vanillin cedar, dark chocolate and spicy fennel notes. Rich and lavish in its feel across the palate, opulent blackberry, liquorice, dark chocolate and dark plum flavours engulf the mouth. Vanillin oak, subtle earthy fennel, mocha and spice characters form the underbelly. Boasting fantastic power, textural volume and velvety tannins it concludes very long, plush and seductive.

Review Summary: Intensely aromatic, this a rich, highly seductive Syrah that powers through to a long plush yet refined finish.

The Detailed review: From the same winery as the 2021 Nicks Secret AC Blewitt Springs Syrah, this is from the esteemed Clarendon sub region of McLaren Vale which has the highest altitude vineyards in the district. First tasted around 18 months ago this has filled out beautifully and now at nearly 50% off delivers brilliant value.

    Pure seduction in a glass.

Midnight black heart with a dark red black tinged hue. Wafting through the nostrils are intense blackberry, liquorice, dark plum and dark chocolate aromas which are complimented by vanillin oak, earthy mocha and spice notes. Rich, generously weighted and highly seductive, the palate features a plush textural feel with blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits rolling over a spicy vanillin cedar, subtle earthy mocha and peppered fennel back drop. Concentrated and powerful yet relatively refined in its feel, it boasts velvet smooth tannins and a long sumptuous finish.

Combining power and refinement, it's beautifully lifted on the nose with dark fruit intensity, cured meat, cedar and cake spice aromas. The palate delivers terrific concentration and depth, splendidly framed by rich texture and layers of polished tannins. This is bold and sturdy, yet with finesse and balance, making it hugely appealing. At its best: now to 2036.

From arguably Langhorne Creek’s most famous estate that has a history dating back to the 1860’s, this winery was also awarded James Halliday’s Wine Companion ‘2024 winery of the year’. Fruit was sourced from a combination of vineyards planted in 1952, 1962 and 1970 with maturation taking place in French and American oak for a period of 18 months.

A rich, fleshy Langhorne Creek Shiraz that delivers an abundance of flavour at a miserly price.

Dense midnight black core with a dark red black tinged hue. Lifted dark plum and liquorice aromas are trailed by some spicy vanillin cedar, blackberry and peppered earth notes. Rich, juicy dark plum, blackberry and liquorice fruits carry a plush feel over a back drop of vanillin oak, scorched earth, blueberry and pepper. Refined with medium to full body weight it possesses velvety tannins and sufficient freshness. Finishes long, succulently fruited and well fleshed.

An absolute cracker. Deep blood red in colour, this is ripe and alluring. The nose gives up aromas of chocolate, plums, cherries, licorice, soy, beef stock and miso. There really is so much packed in here and yet, everything remains in balance. The wine is seamless with good intensity and silky tannins. Very good length here too, which persists impressively. Will drink well for the next ten to fifteen years and anyone with a case in the cellar in a decade will think themselves to be a most astute wine buyer. Drink 2024-2039.

This year's Oban comes finished in casks that previously held Caribbean Pot Still rum. Cream sponge cake and shortbread feature in this lovely oily, malt-focused profile that's polished though simplistic. Needs water to tame the back palate heat, which turns this crisp and biscuity suggesting semi-ripe apples and cinnamon. Reminiscent of good Inchgower. 58% Alc./Vol. Tasted from a 20ml sample.

Other reviews... Himalayan salt bricks, ground pepper, grapefruit peel, and herbal notes, with a hint of dairy toffee on the nose. Sweet tropical fruit flavors—mango, papaya, and lychee—then salted caramel, lemon bonbons, rich toffee, and long-lasting spice on the finish. Water adds lime marmalade and a more oily texture. There are sufficient Oban signature notes here, but the rum cask finish twists it into exciting new directions. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...Well, it seems we shouldn't expect too much of malt whiskies in their natural state anymore; finishes are really becoming common everywhere, even in more or less prestigious ranges, which seems a bit contradictory. In our simple minds, finishes are the cheap versions of malt whiskies, done exclusively for clumsy newcomers (exaggerating a wee bit, once more). Colour: white wine. Nose: a form of sweetness is felt, orange syrup, guava, but not really high-ester rum, at least not notes that could be clearly attributed to any Jamaican pot still, for example, rather than the saline and slightly mustardy character of Oban. Let's see what water will do: not much further development, other than a curiously 'Talisker' side, smoky, with damp earth and polish. Much less exotic fruit than I expected, in the end. Mouth (neat): very powerful, very salty, always with mustard, black olive... With water: more sweetness, around a cough syrup to which honey, Italian bitter, and oranges have been added. I don't find it particularly tropical. Finish: long, earthy and rooty, this time with indeed exotic touches. Mustard returns in the aftertaste, with pepper, nutmeg and a bit of paraffin. Comments: I'm not too sure, actually, in the long term (let's say twenty minutes) the rum notes do come and go. But it remains Oban and I really like Oban. 85 points - whiskyfun.com

Why would you consider Longmorn's official 16 year old when you can score this beauty at a bargain price? We have cask #914, however Signatory have released a number of sister barrels. It seems the flawless bourbon casks consistently bring out notes of coconut, green orchard fruits, honey and cereals - a profile that's admittedly "middle-of-the-road" for Scottish Highlanders, but none the worse for that. This cask yielded 229 bottles. Non chill filtered. 58.3% Alc./vol.

Other reviews... Nice bourbon moped! Urgently needs water, once the bliss point is found, pure enjoyment is the reward! Nose: First citric acid, slightly burnt caramel, then local orchard with surrounding flower meadow, some wood spice. Taste: Repetition of the nose. The wood spice is a little bitter, over time the bitterness decreases and the fruit notes and the caramel sweetness increase, additionally developing herbal notes. Nice, oily mouthfeel. Finish: Medium length, slightly dry. Apples (Grannie Smith) and wood spice. - whiskybase.com

Considering the official 12-year-old cask strength edition sells for around $200, at the asking price, this deeply coloured, high ABV Glenallachie should be a brilliant value. Matured for eleven years in Oloroso sherry casks before being bottled in 2024, it's summed up as "Nice sherried whisky at a fair price... a classic Glenallachie". (whiskybase.com). Expect a full-bodied dram with notes of raisin, fruitcake, dark chocolate and toasted baking spice. 48.2% Alc./vol. Non-chill filtered.

"A fantastic dram for a great price. Traditional Glenallachie style with strong sherry flavour. I'll definitely be buying this again at that price." - internet customer review.

Presumably this is unpeated Bunnah'. Two decades in an Oloroso sherry butt will have had a heavy influence, imparting layers of luxurious flavours, including dark fruits like figs and raisins, rich chocolate and warming spices. 510 bottles produced at 61.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Sherry bomb, nice result from this Bunna cask, but in the end it comes to all the same characteristics of heavy/strong oloroso influence, almost can’t tell any note from Bunnas DNA on the nose, but my friend, on the palates it shines! - whiskybase.com

    $59988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

The 2025 edition of Springbank's oldest official bottling was matured in 85% Bourbon and 15% Sherry casks. The outturn was higher than previous years, with 1900 bottles released. 46% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Nose: A rich and honeyed introduction to this dram, there are notes of ripe peaches, honeycomb and creamy chocolate. Palate: There is a vibrancy on the palate, with familiar tropical fruit and fresh tangerine notes, and a leathery note reminiscent of old library books developing over time. Finish: Tart and syrupy in the finish, with notes of brambles, maraschino cherries and a dunnage warehouse note to round off this dram.

"Perhaps it’s that untamed, uncommercial edge that makes this so sought after. Go figure; we, of course, adore it, as ever." - whiskyfun.com

Collectors note: Springbank's labels almost always arrive with minor wearing and markings, most often to the top of the front labels. This is unavoidable. If you are likely to be disappointed by minor label scuffing, we recommend you don't buy these whiskies.

What a difference time makes. It wasn't that long ago when Springbank was hit by the whisky crash of the 1980s. Forced to close from 1979 to 1987, they re-opened and pledged never to sell to third party blenders again, but instead maintain a modest output, building their success on single malts alone. That decision has paid off. Leading the charge is their entry level ten. Debuting in 2000, distilled two and a half times and peated to around 12-15 ppm, in his book, “101 Whiskies to Try before You Die”, Ian Buxton describes it as “Arguably the most traditional Scotch Whisky...a must have whisky if ever there was one”. Bourbon casks are primarily used for maturation, allowing the distillery character to shine through. Sherry casks are also employed for added body. The ratio usually falls around 60% / 40%, but that can vary between releases. It's this whisky that must set the bar for everything else Springbank make - and it does so with aplomb. Coastal, fruity, malty, medium to full-bodied and with a dry, peaty edge, it's hard to think of another ten year old offering as much substance and complexity. 46% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Other reviews... [2024 bottling] Colour: white wine. Nose: I get the impression that SB 10 is becoming increasingly earthy, dirty, laden with soot, basalt, oyster shells, slightly rancid olive oil, mustard, slags, and various yeasts—everything we love, though it’s perhaps not quite to your new neighbour’s taste, just to be clear. SB 10 will never replace a good, easy Champagne blanc de blancs (not entirely sure about that last remark, S.). Mouth: austere, intensely saline, peppery, even dirtier on the palate, with striking bitterness and that unmistakable oily texture. Grilled aubergines come close, before lemon peel and a generous glass of fino sherry ride to the rescue. And it’s not the first time one gets the impression they’ve poured a bit of Longrow into the vatting tank. Finish: long, with that wonderfully discordant sensation of an oily yet razor-sharp malt. The aftertaste is saline, peppery, mezcal-like, and lemony. Comments: perhaps it’s that untamed, uncommercial edge that makes this so sought after. Go figure; we, of course, adore it, as ever. 91 points - whiskyfun.com

A remarkable value in the blended category.

Gregor Hannah has managed to 'rescue' a cask that was destined to be lost in a big brand blend. You'll be thanking him for bottling it. This is a beautiful, medium-bodied example of the kind of blend rarely found on the market today. Malt drinkers will find pleasure in the depth and seamless integration of flavours that conjure leather, honey, dried coconut and milk chocolate coupled with hints of cigar box, Bounty Bar, light pepper and rancio in a long, mature finish. Over ten to fifteen minutes in the glass this continues to open up and reward. Gentle and effortless uncut, so best consumed neat or with a single ice cube or you'll lose its nuances. 248 bottles were drawn from a refill butt at 41.5% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... We’d already tasted another cask of this ‘blended when young’ style (ex-Edrington in theory) by Hannah Whisky Merchants, which had been very, very good (WF 87). Colour: full gold. Nose: tricky to pin down, but that’s not the point—here there’s glue, smoke, bitter almonds, maraschino, lanolin, pistachio cream (we’ve just come back from Sicily), and rich, black potting soil. All of it is rather lovely. Mouth: almonds and pistachios take the lead, though a pronounced salinity and a good helping of black tobacco add a fine contradiction, rounded off with a bit of coconut (grain component?) It’s an intriguing profile, certainly unusual. Finish: medium length, but saltier still. A faint tequila-like touch. Comments: these are very unusual whiskies, the sort that no master blender could ever hope to replicate. That sense of rarity adds undeniable charm to the whole affair. 88 points - whiskyfun.com

Notes from the bottlers... This exceptional blended scotch whisky is created in our unique and special way by blending malt and grain whiskies from different distilleries and differing spirit styles. Each batch is small, bespoke and distinctly different from the last. Bottled and hand labelled in our own warehouse where you'll be glad to know, no artificial colouring or chill-filtration takes place. The latest edition to our blended Scotch brand family is a 'classic blend'. By this we mean a mix of malt and grain whiskies blended in the tradition style. The taste offered - Blood orange, custard creams, furniture polish, black pepper, hazelnut and dried coconut.

"Exemplary blending skills and classically Hibiki."
    - whiskyadvocate.com

Launched in March 2015 as the fifth addition to Suntory's celebrated "Hibiki"collection, "Harmony" follows on from Yamazaki and Hakushu Distiller's Reserve which are also younger, NAS (no age statement) whiskies, aimed at maintaining sales due to the scarcity of older whisky stocks. (Several years ago, Nikka decided to discontinue a large number of their whiskies due to increased demand and a decrease in supply).

Details of the composition of Japanese Harmony haven’t been revealed, but, like the Distiller’s Reserve, it's likely a blend of young and old material. Single malts entering in the blend come from Yamazaki and Hakushu distilleries, while grain whisky comes from Chita. The whisky resounds with calm complexity and “Wa,” oneness - at least that's how the producers like to describe it. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Poised and complex, with typically lifted fruitiness: strawberry ice cream, pineapple, peach, balanced by delicate oak, bamboo shoot-like delicacy, then lemon. The palate is more rounded than that very forward nose, with toffee notes adding some weight. A touch of smoke comes along in the mid-palate, before fruits and caramelized coffee biscuits. Water allows the flavors to flood the palate. Exemplary blending skills and classically Hibiki.
