"...a nimble touch and a disarming allure. Just close your eyes and enjoy." 97 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2023

Perched on a rocky headland, the Ardbeg distillery was founded in 1815 by the MacDougalls of Ardbeg. The distillery's scattered white-washed buildings are reminiscent of a Dutch settlement and add to the dramatic coastal landscape. Ardbeg has had a chequered history and in recent times had been closed down for many years. Glenmorangie acquired Ardbeg in 1997 and has set about restoring the distillery to its former glory. Despite the turbulence of its past, none of Ardbeg’s qualities have been diminished. All of the time-worn traditions have been carefully preserved and passed on to today’s whisky makers. The Ardbeg 10 Year Old is clear testimony to this. In his 'Complete Book of Whisky' Jim Murray said of it: 'If perfection on the palate exists, this is it.'

Other reviews...n24 more complex, citrus-led and sophisticated than recent bottlings, though the peat is no less but now simply displayed in an even greater elegance; a beautiful sea salt strain to this; t24 gentle oils carry on them a lemon-lime edge, sweetened by barley and a weak solution of golden syrup; the peat is omnipotent, turning up in every crevice and wave, yet never once over-stepping its boundary; f24 stuuningly clean, the oak offers not a bitter trace but rather a vanilla and butterscotch edge to the barley. Again the smoke wafts around in a manner unique in the world of whisky when it comes to sheer elan and adroitness; b25 like when you usually come accross something that goes down so beautifully and with such a nimble touch and disallarming allure, just close your eyes and enjoy... 97 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2013 / 2023

...Last time we tried our beloved Ten it was a circa 2015 bottling, and it was great (WF 89). Colour: white wine. Nose: I have the feeling that Ardbeg Ten got more crystalline, perhaps a tad simpler as well, and probably more distillate-driven than ever before. I’m so glad no obvious vanilla is dumbing it down, and of course no ‘wine’, so this is as bright as possible and full of lime, seawater, smoked salmon, and of these wee tarry/cardboardy touch that are so typically Ardbeg. Shall we call this nose ‘razory’? Mouth: lapsang souchong with lime, smoked almonds, kippers, plasticine, almond oil, whelks, brine, hessian… This is just perfectly perfect. Finish: rather long, smoky, almondy, lime-y, salty. Comments: the month is not over but Ardbeg 10 will possibly be March’s bang-for-your-buck bottling. Because in my little tasting book, Ardbeg 10 is simply back to… 90 points - whiskyfun.com

...the classic Ardbeg bottling, and one of the most heavily peated entry-level whiskies from all of Scotland. Ten years are just about right for taming Ardbeg’s fire, though the nose is still moderately heavy with straight, smoky peat notes, though also lightly briny but distinctly maritime in its tone. The body follows in lockstep, adding to the burning embers of driftwood notes of iodine, orange peel, coriander, and ginger. Beautifully balanced despite the heavy peat influence, it remains one of the most essential Islay whiskies — and an essential whisky that is required drinking for anyone who wants to form a base understanding of single malts. - drinkhacker.com

...Nose: Astoundingly smoky, yet delicate with subtle tarry notes behind. With water the smoke dies a little and raisin and caramelised apple notes emerge. Palate: An immediate waft of peat smoke. Full, robustly flavoured with turf and lapsang souchong tea. Finish: Salty, long and filled with fragrant peat reek. Comment: A punch in the chops from a stroppy Islay middleweight. Flavour-packed yet delicate. Rated: 9/10 - whiskymag.com

    Cocktail: The Smoky Martini
This is an unusual combination that works surprisingly well. Some people use less peaty whiskies, however the true Smoky Martini requires the likes of Ardbeg or Laphroaig – Single Malts which lend their peaty, textured flavour to the creamy character of a good vodka.

Method: Rinse a chilled martini glass with Ardbeg Malt Whisky and pour out any extra. Shake 60ml of Premium Vodka in a shaker filled with large ice cubes and strain into a Martini glass. Garnish with a lemon and orange twist.

"...upped its game phenomenally." - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2025-26

'Moch' was the first single malt from Caol Ila to be selected entirely on the basis of its taste, rather than age, wood, alcohol volume or finish. The name means "Dawn" in Gaelic (Caol Ila's location on Islay’s east coast is the first on the island to see the rising sun). Reportedly, this is softer and lighter in style than the standard 12 year old.

Other reviews... This has upped its game phenomenally. Nothing like the limp bottling I tasted last time, this one really does grab Caol Ila by the horns. The only complaint: should have been at 46% 92.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2025-26

Easy drinking Islay...though I think they mean "Mocha". 87 points - Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2014

...This new expression from Diageo's Islay distillery of Caol Ila carries no age statement and takes its name from the Gaelic word for "dawn." Initially, it will be exclusively available to registered Friends of the Classic Malts, and may ultimately go on wider release. Billy Stitchell, long-time distillery manager at Caol Ila, says that Moch is selected for taste rather than age, and you'll still find it every inch a Caol Ila. It's a new departure for us, to have a whisky that's not defined by age or strength or finish, but by taste, and it's an exciting development, I think. Initially a little mashy on the nose; inky, with brine, peat and a hint of peanut brittle. Soft and sweet in the mouth, with developing notes of caramel and bonfire smoke. The finish is medium in length, drying with more smoke and root ginger. 43.0% ABV 3 stars - www.whisky-pages.com

Rich, expansive and refined, this is a classic example of Yarra Valley Shiraz.

The Coldstream Hills Reserve Shiraz has been a single vineyard wine since 2014 and is made using traditional techniques in small open fermentation pots, including in some years, the use of whole clusters. The wine was matured in seasoned and new (24%) French oak barriques and vat for seven months.
Dense midnight black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Leaping from the glass are spicy dark plum and liquorice aromas which are complexed by notions of clove, vanillin cedar, smoked meats and peppered earth. Rich, expansive dark plum, liquorice and black cherry fruits engulf the beautifully fleshed, medium bodied palate. Smoky vanillin cedar, dried meat, clove and peppered earth elements lend further nuance. Displaying plenty of power, it has a polished yet sturdily built tannin structure and long, refined, pepper infused finish.

Well, I think I got the full name right here. From the Murphy vineyard I believe, on Wilderness Road.
Lime and lemongrass, a honey toast thing, bright and juicy, excellent flavour with a gentle chalky grip, has weight but it’s nicely balanced and the finish is very long. This is excellent. Right in the slot, though no hurry. Drink 2024-2034+

Only five years young, that extra time has certainly done its thing. A superb wine, I had the luxury of tasting this De Iuliis Aged Release Single Vineyard Semillon alongside its newly released 2024 sibling and it was quite the treat to see where things are at. Go here.
There is still plenty of energy within and the slight toasty character expected with age is starting to show its hand. Honey tones are seeping through too, with lemons and limes not far from the action, albeit not as vibrant but there is still some zip. A sip slow and consider type of wine, match this with the textural splendour of scallops and heaven awaits. This will live comfortably for at least another decade. Superb stuff indeed. Drink to 2034+

Another red wine first, this time first-fill Lagrien butts. The varietal originates from Sud Tyrol-Alto Adige in the far-north east of Italy. Two barrels yielded 1710 bottles. 48.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... a really good whisky from a rather rare first-fill Lagrein cask from beautiful South Tyrol... A surprisingly smooth dram at 48.2% alcohol. Vanilla and other fruits join the aforementioned spices. Red ripe grapes and berries, which I can't quite grasp because of the overwhelming spice. I'm sitting by Lake Kaltern, daydreaming. But where are the oak notes? The more I drink, the more my mouth waters. Is there such a thing as sweet oak? This spice load has soaked the barrel wood. Absolutely no bitterness. Delicious, dangerously so! The finish is long and finally, some cocoa and wood. It just keeps getting better. The best part. - whiskybase.com

Established in 1979 by Geoff and Susan Bull, Freycinet was the first commercial winery on the East Coast of Tasmania. Today daughter Lindy and partner Claudio Radenti who both have extensive winemaking experience from their travels around the world carry on the tradition. 2024 was a standout vintage delivering fruit of exceptional quality with concentrated flavours and ripe, juicy acidity.

A magnificently sculptured and pure Tassie Riesling that boasts explosive power and intensity

Brilliant water like colour with a distinctive glimmer of green around the outskirts. Leaping out of the glass are powerful aromatics of lime, lemon and Granny Smith apple followed by some hints of orange rind, talc and chalky mineral notes. The palate is a combination of terrific intensity, drive and tension delivering sculptured, yet texturally engulfing flavours of lime, lemon and orange rind underpinned by mouth watering acidity. Lining the back half are green apple, chalky talc, wet steel and flinty mineral characters. Zingy in its feel it finishes exceptionally long, concentrated and super scrumptious.
Hard to resist now but will also cellar up to 6-8 years.

A taut, high-tensile East Coast riesling that's all velocity and lip-smackingly pure lime and lemon fruits with hints of sea spray, crushed stone, lemongrass, grapefruit pith, citrus blossom and thirst-slaking good times. It's got a wicked minerally cadence as it cuts across the palate; a touch of clover blossom in there, too, if we're getting picky. But we're not getting picky and this is just a delicious, focused Tassie riesling. Drink by 2034.

If you were sitting quietly in a corner, contemplating the vicissitudes of life, and a glass of this exceptional chardonnay came your way, well, all would be very well indeed. And you’d perk up. It’s a wine that tends to be scintillating in youth, driven by all manner of citrus flavours – lemon, pink grapefruit with a dash of lime but also a mille-feuille of leesy lusciousness, oak spices and a moreish savouriness. It seems powerful and explosive with its acidity, drive and energy yet manages to remain classy and complex. Drink by 2032.

Jane Faulkner – James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion

The 2022 season was warm and low-yielding, particularly for Chardonnay, and many of the wines produced in the region this season can be typified by their nuttiness and a distinct chamomile tea/white flower character. Here, the 2022 Art Series Chardonnay is showing both of those characters, neatly wedged into the authoritative profile of Leeuwin Art Series Chardonnay. Today, for perhaps the first time ever in seeing these wines on release, I note that the oak is a key player in the drinking experience—as ever, seamlessly matched to the fruit and an important part of the wine's style and evident here today. There are toasted nuts, yellow fruits, exotic spices and an open fan of acidity/phenolics through the finish. This 2022 will prove to be a powerful and statuesque player in the wider footprint of Art Series Chardonnays. It's one to collect, but for drinking in the short/immediate term, decanting is recommended. Sealed under screw cap.  Drink 2030-2047.

Erin Larkin – Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate

This iconic Australian Chardonnay never allows standards to drop and this is yet another stellar effort from the great Chardonnay production line. A shimmering pale lemon, we have notes of spices, lemon curd, ginger, pink grapefruit, lemongrass, florals, peaches, nectarines, jasmine and stone fruits. There is a whiff of smoky oak as well and integration is proceeding well. There is complete balance here, with focus and energy. The wine is still very young and it will certainly be better if you can wait for two or three years before opening. Then enjoy it for a further ten to fifteen years. Juicy, with a supple texture and a long and lingering finish, along which the intensity is maintained for the full journey. A cracker. Drink 2025-2040.

From a very well-known family owned estate with an Italian-Australian heritage, this McLaren Vale winery burst onto the scene in the early 2000’s when the then, world's most powerful wine critic, Robert Parker, lauded many of the wines with scores in the high nineties.
This, their flagship Cabernet Sauvignon, is made in the traditional Amarone style whereby the grapes are dried to concentrate the aromas and flavours, as well as soften the tannins. This will be one of the last vintages that you’ll be able to get your hands on with the winery deciding to no longer make this wine due to the high production costs.

Thick and densely textured, this is a decadently rich, explosive Amarone styled Cabernet that will blow your socks off.

Incredibly dense pitch black heart with a deep very dark red black tinged hue. Potent ripe blackcurrant, Morello cherry, black plum and chocolate bullet aromas engulf the nostrils with vanillin oak, black cherry, earth and spicy cinnamon notes ensuing. Thick and densely textured, the palate boasts explosive power and off the chart’s richness. A super concentrate of ripe black currant, morello cherry, black plum, liquorice and black cherry fruits saturates every corner of the mouth complimented by notions of spicy vanillin oak, earthy tobacco, black olive and dried herbs. Ripe chewy tannins provide ample structure. Finishes long and decadent.

Stylish and refined, the wine shows dark plum, sweet cherry, fine leather, olive and cedar characters on the nose, followed by a weighty palate that's plump and richly textured. Sam Kim – Wine Orbit

An absolutely cracking McLaren Vale Cab. Who says warm regions can’t do Cabernet? Sure, it might not be a Bordeaux replica, but it is delicious and drinks majestically. The name? Just like Frank ** did in attempting to expose corruption in the NYPD in the early 70s, this wine goes against the grain, as an Apassimento style Cabernet. For that, the fruit went into 10-kilo drying crates and was stored for 25 days, over this period, the grapes lost 30% of their weight. This had the effect of concentrating aromas and softening the tannins with the wine spending two years in a combination of French oak hogsheads, 60% new and 40% one-year-old. The 2020 *** Cabernet Sauvignon was made without finings and received only light filtration prior to bottling. Deep red/maroon, this has an appealing ripeness with notes of chocolate, cigar boxes, mocha, coffee beans and a hint of vanilla. The structure is seamless with juicy acidity and excellent length. Utterly delicious, this is more a cracking McLaren Vale red than the typically varietal Cabernet. Ten to twelve years. Drink 2024-2036.

However, at just $16.99, it represents great everyday drinking, especially when one considers that Yarra Valley Pinot at this price is nearly impossible to find nowadays.

A highly engaging, savoury Yarra Valley Pinot that delivers exceptional value.

Red to dark red colour with black toned edges and a light red to red hue. The expressive nose offers up scents of dark cherry, rhubarb and strawberry which are complimented by bramble, spicy dried herb and forest floor notes. Delicious dark cherry, rhubarb and strawberry fruits make a supple entrance onto the palate complexed by notions of brambly cedar, dried herb, forest floor and spice elements. MV6 clone grown in Gruyere and matured in French barriques for 10 months. Red Currants, lingonberries and earthy rooibos tea. There is unfurling hibiscus and baked cherry pie. The palate spreads steadily with a wealth of acidity and powdery uniform tannins. There is underlying brown earth, cinnamon quills and cumin spice. A sweetness from fig hearts carries long on the finish. A vintage that threw a bit of all the weather extremes their way, this is a total success. Capturing abundant bright fruit and gentle graceful tannins with a core of savouriness. Drink now or cellar for up to 5-6 years. A wine that would show off served beside some pillows of gnocchi and sauteed mushrooms. Drink 2025-2031.

Harvested from the Gruyere district of the Yarra Valley, there’s plenty to get excited about this wine, it’s nose singing pure Pinot aromas – crimson fruits in the raspberry and cherry zone, some poached rhubarb earthiness as well, a back seat note of spearmint as well, all of this tumbling together as you taste, French oak spice offering some savoury seasoning to a lively and energised palate. A strong primary Pinot game with enough secondary interest to turn an engaged Burgundy head.

All killer, as they say … The quiet power in this is something to behold – a wine of gravitas and grace. It comes in a little darker of fruit this year, though not heavy with it. 2025 marks 62 years since the first vines were planted at Wantirna Estate, established in 1963 on an east-facing slope in Melbourne's southeastern outskirts. Once a mix of orchards, bush, and grasslands, the vineyard thrives today under the care of Maryann, Reg's daughter, though Reg remains actively involved. The wines, named after his four grandchildren, feature labels illustrated by Michael Leunig, reflecting each grandchild's personality, a heartfelt touch to this family-run estate.

The vineyard's three distinct Pinot Noir blocks, covering just ten acres, are hand-harvested separately, often with up to two weeks between harvest dates. The mature block, with vines from the early 1970s, contributes savory tones and fine tannins. The Front block adds spice, while the Fruit Tree block offers generous fruitiness. Blended together, these components create the complex Pinot Noir style Wantirna Estate is renowned for.

A deep and brightly coloured crimson purple. Both to look at and smell, this is a concentrated and complex Wantirna pinot that's going to need some time. Aromas of black cherry, damson plum and dried red rose petals lead onto the palate, which is densely packed, structured and very long. Have it with food now, for sure, but those who still have some five to ten years from now will be very well rewarded. Drink 2026-2035.

I visited Wantirna Estate around this time last year, and didn’t taste any wine, rather we had tea and biscuits on the porch. Lovely. It’s a vineyard as a garden, if you take my meaning, The place has a sense of intimacy and it’s a world away from many larger producers. 130 dozen produced using very light weight bottles at that. Yay!
Raspberry, red cherry, mint, cedar, pencils and spice, something of a potpourri perfume too. It’s medium-bodied, all red fruits, a little spicy and autumnal, fresh raspberry crunch to acidity, with a firmness to tannin that offers grainy grip, finishing a little sappy with lively acidity, savoury flavours, and excellent length. Oak still shows a little too much as at now, but this is a strong release, and I like the ‘mineral’ character it offers too. Drink 2027-2034+.

The 2023 Lily Pinot Noir leads with cherry and cranberry, moss and tobacco, with layers of damp earth and exotic spice. This is beautiful. The acidity is woven gently throughout and offers a delicacy and laciness that I find highly attractive. This is such a gorgeous wine. 13.6% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2025-2038.
