  Several distilleries are showing renewed interest in the varieties of barley they use. Arran joins that list with an 18,000-bottle limited edition made from Optic barley grown at Bellevue Farm by the Currie family. The variety has been used for malting in breweries and distilleries since the mid-1990s and is known for its biscuit-like aromas. Maturation is the same as the standard 10 year old (first-fill bourbon barrels and second-fill sherry hogsheads), and it's very much in the style we're accustomed to (and love) from this distillery - full and creamy textured - with hints of tea biscuits and light orchard fruits on the nose, the flavours suggesting crisp red apples and light vanilla, bittersweet oak, cocoa and just a little more prickle from the 50% ABV. It's hard to say whether the Optic barley is better. What is evident is the wonderfully rounded way the malt oils-up and coats the tongue in a manner that distinguishes it from most young whiskies. For comparison, it's also similar to several higher-strength Glenfiddichs we've tasted. New batches will be released annually with variations depending on the crop type, cask types and volumes available. Bottled non chill-filtered.

  Other reviews... Nose: Some classic Arran notes. No loud cask notes which is nice - gives the distillate more space to shine. Taste: Feels balanced, with a nice, thick structure for a 10yo. I tried this as a starter at a whisky festival and it was absolutely perfect for that purpose. The bottle cost seems reasonable compared to the quality. Finish: The barley stays for a while.   I love the nose on the 2022 Clos Du Roy, a ripe, broad, impressive 2022 that has sweet cassis and black cherry fruits, nicely integrated oak, medium to full body, and building yet ripe, balanced tannins. It’s an incredibly impressive Fronsac that has the fruit and texture to shine today as well as the balance and structure to evolve for 10-12+ years. Drink 2025-2037.

  Darnley’s View is a creation from the Wemyss Company in Fife, otherwise known for their flavour-themed whiskies. The name celebrates the moment in 1565 when Mary Queen of Scots spied her future husband, Lord Darnley, at the family’s home, Wemyss Castle in Scotland. The company makes two gins - a London Dry and this spiced version which employs a selection of berries, seeds, peels and roots. It's more intense on the nose than its London Dry counterpart, offering up gently spiced scents of juniper, turmeric, coriander seed and muted cinnamon. Light on entry, but developing good concentration, there's a medley of spices amid the juniper and gingery warmth that carry through to the finish. Some unusual textural qualities combine here, while bottling at 42.7% is said to enhance the key botanicals. A gin that will come into its own during the Autumn and Winter months, or try it in a Gin Toddy or Negroni. Tasted from a 20ml sample.

  Other reviews... Built on a London dry base but given extra “spice botanicals,” this gin has an almost neutral nose but the palate pops with citrus and spice.   The raw materials used to create this whisky are quite unusual and include estate grown Cadboll malt along with chocolate malt (chocolate malt is usually used in the production of beers like porter and stout). The whisky has been matured in new, low toast, Ozark American oak casks and ex-Oloroso sherry casks. It is the brainchild of Dr Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie's head distiller who first had the idea over 20 years ago.

  Retasted June 2017... Brilliant topaz / beams from the glass. Almost floral notes of cocoa and manuka honey drizzled over hints of orange spice cake and shortbread. Starts understated and fresh but finishes unlike almost any other whisky: A peacock's tail of fantastic length and force with miniature detonations of orange zest, dark chocolate, hazelnut and sweet spice dappling the tongue. The persistence is quite exceptional. Maintains its place as a high point in the Glenmorangie stable. Non chill filtered. 46% Alc./Vol.

  First tasted 2008... Deep orange brown colour with golden hue. Sweet and inviting nose of Mixed Peel, Chocolate, Coffee beans and Almond biscuit. The palate is thick, luscious and mouthfilling, almost creamy. Pronounced flavours of chocolate, coconut, orange, vanilla and hazelnut. The palate shows no sign of spirit heat, even without the addition of water. Outstanding balance. Exceptionally long, supple aftertaste of chocolate, vanilla, almond and hazelnut. Hints of orange emerge then fade. Drink with chocolate or dried fruit desserts, coffee or a cigar. A phenomenal, if unusual whisky. 97 points

  In 2016 Velier launched the Habitation Velier portfolio - the world’s only range of Pure Single Rums. These are rums from a single distillery, distilled exclusively in pot stills. Complex and typically more suitable to long ageing, Velier's selections are entirely matured in the tropics, ensuring a natural, though accelerated development of flavours at the expense of a higher angel's share (>22%).

  Always highly anticipated, Long Pond has become a Jamaican reference point for rum enthusiasts. This youthful edition was distilled from molasses in 2019 and aged for three years. It's worth noting that after closing from 2012 to 2017 for renovation, the Long Pond distillery was almost destroyed by a flash fire that sarted in the cane fields. It ravaged the fermentation room and fresh rum stocks (approximately 65,000 litres were destroyed). In that context, we're lucky to have received this rum at all. The flames spared its famous John Dore stills and no less legendary Blair column stills, prized for capturing the deeply mineral, empyreumatic and medicinal character for which this magnificent ester-rich marque is so well-known. 1200 bottles are on offer globally.   Notes from the bottlers... Nose : Rich, heady. The incredible first nose is empyreumatic (apricot kernel, turpentine, diesel), exotic (persimmon, mango, guava), oxidative (balsamic vinegar, macerated fruit) and syrupy (hot cane sugar). Allowed to breathe, fragrances of vetiver, lavender honey, lime and jasmine give an idea of the breadth and complexity of the aroma palette. Palate : Taut, lively. On the attack, notes of petrol and very ripe mango appear alongside chocolatey and spicy (ylang ylang, clove, saffron) flavours. On the mid-palate, roasted pineapple and plantain banana juicily and smoothly enrich the flavour palette’s exotic register. The even fruitier end of the palate reveals notes of peach, pear, kaffir lime and coconut. Finish : Long, concentrated. The powdery finish (cocoa, rice pudding, grated ginger) is remarkably soft. The slender end of the finish gives its own take on the exotic register of the nose and palate. On the retro-nasal olfaction, a vanilla, spicy (cinnamon, ginger) and herbaceous (sugar cane) cane sugar spreads across the palate.   Incredibly rich, dense and potent, this is a luxurious expression of old school Barossa Shiraz at an amazing 85% off.

  Spectacular depth of colour featuring a pitch black heart and a very deep dark red black tinged hue. Incredibly potent, the nose offers up decadent aromatics of dark plum, liquorice and dark chocolate, lavishly overlaid with spicy vanillin oak and mocha. Some earthy fennel like notes also chime in. Rich, densely concentrated and opulently textured, the weighty palate is saturated with blackberry, dark plum, dark chocolate and liquorice flavours. Prominent vanillin oak inserts itself in the middle with mocha, earth, fennel and spice elements forming the undercard.   From the excellent 2022 vintage, the fruit is sourced from two Barossa Valley vineyards, 89% from 100-year-old vines in Seppeltsfield and the remaining 11% from an estate vineyard in Stockwell, where the vines are forty years of age. A percentage of whole bunches are included in the fermentation which is with native yeasts. Maturation is for two years in French oak, 50% new, with the remainder in older hogsheads. Near black with a deep maroon rim, the nose gives us aromas of spices, cassis, root vegetables, dried herbs, cocoa powder, delicatessen meats and blackberries. There is great concentration here, with wonderful balance, and the wine has immensely impressive length. A silky texture with satiny tannins, intensity is maintained throughout. Like this a lot. Enjoy this over the next twenty years. Drink 2026-2046.

  Shiraz can be expressed in so many ways depending on all its elements of source, site, regional and specific climatic influences, of vintage weather variations, and of course winemaking techniques. In other words, it’s not all one and the same. This has a definite cool climate, colder season stamp, with a wonderful, bright-eyed character, aromatics of summer berry pudding, crushed grape flesh, and dark mint. An exuberance as well: perhaps whole cluster and whole berry components. A tasting sensation that lifts upwards rather than buries the fruit under timber, earth and heavy spice. A swirl of crimson and black cherry and berry with gossamer tannins. A joyous wine to taste then drink again – its natural purity is all that’s needed.

  Midnight black dark red core with a dark red black tinged hue. Black cherry, dark plum and liquorice aromas mix with scorched earth and peppered dried herb notes. Rich spicy dark plum, liquorice and black cherry fruits abound carrying with them a nicely fleshed feel across the mid weighted palate. Juicy mouth feel with chewy tannins and an underbelly of scorched earth, dried meats and peppered herbs. Highly savoury, it has a long pepper laced conclusion.

  This is a good wine, and it’s good value. It’s a spicy, medium-weight style of shiraz, with a touch of positive reduction helping it along, with bell pepper and black pepper characters wedded to cherry-plum fruit. There’s also the merest whisper of musky vanilla, though oak is a low-impact player here. The tannin has a grainy, grunty aspect to it but then, it’s not overdone, and not dominant. There are no question marks here, everything is positive, though a slight warmth to the alcohol is the only thing you’d point to, if you were forced. It’s no real matter and besides, even at full price the value here is decidedly in the buyer’s favour. Drink 2025-2030.

  Dark purple hues with a ruby outer rim lead toa bouquet of ripeness and richness, aromas of dark berries and roasted plums, a dark raspberry almost jammy quality then smoky earth, a touch of boot polish wood smoke. Fleshy, fruity, varietal and dry on the palate. All the fruit scents turn into flavour on the palate set in a silky frame with fine polished tannins and medium+ acid line. A lovely example, balanced and well made with best drinking from day of purchase through 2030+.

  Owner and manager of Pierro Estate, Dr Mike Peterkin, has a viticultural pedigree second to none. Besides making one of Margaret River's and Australia’s best Chardonnays, Mike also produced the first Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blend in Australia.
  Fermented in French barriques, the wine goes through a full malolactic fermentation which helps achieve superior texture, mouth feel and a more refined, persistent flavour. Lees are stirred fortnightly by hand in barrel over a period of 12 months.
  Brilliant pale straw colour with green highlighted edges and a watery hue. Both complex and captivating, the nose features an elevated aromatic profile of white peach, nectarine and citrus infused with gun flint married to biscuity oak, faint nougat, delicate dried honey and spice. Rich and incredibly powerful yet possessing wonderful finesse, the medium weighted palate is layered with mouth filling white peach, pear and nectarine fruits. Infusions of gun flint, citrusy nougat, subtle dried honey, mealy roasted almond like characters, traces of crème brulee and spice lend further sophistication to what is a kaleidoscopic flavour experience. Generous creamy like textural feel counterpointed by a delightful underlying freshness. Finishes exceptionally long with a Burgundian like refinement.

  From one of Margaret River’s great chardonnay producers, this is yet another brilliant example of the style that has made Pierro so admired. You wouldn’t guess it came from a warm year—it’s delicate and fine, with a pristine brightness. The nose shows light grapefruit, citrus, a touch of butterscotch, and a subtle mealy note in the background. The palate has real zing, with lively, pristine acidity driving through to a sustained finish. A chalky, minerally edge adds to the linear feel and precision. Another outstanding Pierro chardonnay.

  Notes on 1992 Douglas Laing & Co. Old Particular Single Cask Cameronbridge 30 Year Old Cask Strength Single Grain Scotch Whisky (700ml)

  Of all of Scotland's grain whiskies, we do find that Cameronbridge often surpasses expectations. Even at middle age it's capable of delivering a whisky that's slightly richer and more malt-like than its peers. Thanks to independents, we're occasionally getting access to some great values from what remains an under-appreciated category. Distilled in September of 1992 and matured in a second-fill barrel, this Douglas Laing edition arrives without chill filtration or dilution, at a natural cask strength of 48.2%. The colour looks reasonably deep for a grain, suggesting that they didn't use a completely inactive cask. With good wood and three decades behind it, this promises to be a text-book example.

  Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Shows some early barley sugar sweetness, with dry grains amongst an old book library ambience. Palate: Wonderfully dulcet with a mixed spin of vanilla and citrus, topped by florals... Finish: Catch some warm cocoa ahead of subtle spices, serial cereal and more late vanilla fudge.

  Notes on Kilchoman Small Batch 2023 Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

  A Kilchoman matured in specially selected shaved, toasted & re-charred (STR) red wine casks, bottled non-chill filtered at high strength. The combination of 75% Bourbon, 20% red wine and 5% sherry casks results in a classic Kilchoman profile of citrus and peat smoke with layers of red fruits, cinnamon sweetness, and fresh vanilla. Founder, Anthony Wills adds, "...Rather than dominating, Loch Gorm’s oloroso maturation works in harmony with the natural character of Kilchoman. The 2023 release has a fantastic spectrum of flavour, from rich spices and macerated peaches to fresh citrus, ginger, orange zest and waves of salty peat smoke." 2520 bottles are available at 48.7% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.
