Alongside its official bottlings, Beenleigh has begun a collaboration with Europe's La Maison du Whisky and the acclaimed independent bottler, Velier. After two very interesting previous releases (the 2006 15 year old and the 2015 five year old), Beenleigh is following up with a 2013 Single Vintage. Made from molasses produced and processed in Queensland and fermented for 3 - 4 days, the rum was (unusually) 'reverse distilled': First in a single column and then re-distilled in a pot still, similar to those found in Guyana at Demerara Distillers Ltd. It was subsequently aged for a decade in ex-bourbon casks at the distillery in Eagleby, in Queensland's tropical climate, with an angel's share of >25%. This new reference is quite unique in putting Australian rum on the world map. Expect something powerful and spicy. Bottled in 2023, no sugar has been added. 59% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the bottlers... Nose : Fresh and expressive. Russian leather, prune kernel, grapefruit, rosewater, and sumac. Palate : Vanilla, dried apricot, kaffir lime, orange zest, cardamom, and lavender. Finish : Long and assertive. Guava, camphor, pine resin, black cherry, dark chocolate, and almond.

The 2015 La Grande Dame is bright and nicely focused. There’s good energy driving a core of Pinot Noir fruit. Pear, white flowers, mint, white pepper and lime are nicely delineated. The 2015 is not the most complex Grande Dame I have ever tasted, but it offers plenty of immediacy with no vegetal notes or hard contours that have proven so challenging elsewhere. This is an expertly made Champagne by any measure. Dosage is 6 grams per liter. Disgorged: October, 2021. Drink 2023-2030.

2015 shows off the sunny fruits of the year with more grip and intensity than the 2008 and 2012. Fleshy orange, red pear, dried pineapple and chewy grapefruit peel build on a firmly structured frame, although there is a suppleness of nougat and acacia honey lurking in the middle that promises to emerge with a little patience. The bustling energy of the vintage is sitting proud for now, bitter almond and fruit skin building to an energising close despite the moderate acidity. John Vickery was a legend of the Australian wine industry and is widely acknowledged as the old master of Riesling. His illustrious career spaned over 50 years at the likes of Leo Buring and Richmond Grove during which time he amassed more than 50 Trophies and over 400 gold medals. He was also responsible for the re-introduction of screw caps with his 1998 Richmond Grove Watervale Riesling.
A mouth watering explosion of lime and citrus fruit.
A sub regional blend sourced from Vickery’s dedicated growers. Brilliant water like to very pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges. Soaring from the glass are intense lime, citrus and orange rind aromas which are trailed by some distinct talc, green apple and chalky mineral notes. The palate is a mouth watering explosion of lime and citrus fruit which combines textural volume with serious power. Some green apple, orange rind, chalky talc and mineral characters also chime in. Superb concentration together with crisp acidity form a dry, expansive and searingly scrumptious finish.

Tasted from a special magnum commemorating the 10th anniversary of this sub-regional release. The fruit is from several vineyard sources, with some of the material dating back to plantings from 1975. Quintessential Clare Valley riffs on Rose’s lime juice, quince paste, tonic, preserved lemon rind, wild fennel and gardenias. Dry and medium-bodied by virtue of the sheer extract and density of the mouthfeel. Yet despite the dryness, there is nothing hard. Tactile and impressively juicy across a tenacious finish. A blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Malbec. Magnificent dense inky black colour with a very deep dark red black hue. A potent combination of blackcurrant, liquorice and black cherry aromatics are complimented by hints of ripe blueberries, dark chocolate, vanillin oak, dried herbs and spice. A tidal wave of fruit hits the palate with tremendous force sending shockwaves right through to the sensationally long finish. Densely textured, lavish flavours of blackcurrant, blackberry and liquorice saturate the mouth over a back drop of vanillin oak, subtle dark chocolate and spicy dried herbs. Ripe chewy tannins form the backbone but are largely absorbed by the wealth of opulence that this wine is. Concludes with an exceptionally long aftertaste. A very lavish expression of Mendoza Cabernet.

Vinea Marson’s Sangiovese has Italy stamped all over it. The 2019 was picked marginally later than a regular vintage (approximately early April) allowing the grapes to reach optimal ripeness. Post fermentation/maceration the wine was racked off into a mix of 20% new barrique and tonneau for a maturation period of 12 months.
A beautifully aged Sangiovese that’s drinking superbly.
Dark red core with black toned edges and a red to brick red hue. Elevated aromas of dark cherry and blackcurrant mix with earth, dried herb and spicy tobacco notes. Rich red to black currant and red to dark cherry fruits have an even and smooth flow across the palate complimented by savoury nuances of earth, dried herbs, tobacco and spice. Excellent concentration and length with agile yet integrated acidity. Polished yet still slightly rustic tannins concluding long and spicy.
Drink over the next 1-2 years.

Boasts a distinctive Italian-Australian personality, one that is ripe and sweet-fruited but also savoury and very much down to earth (literally!). Black cherry, roasted plums, thyme, sage, vanillin oak and earth bring an aromatic mix of dark fruits, herbs and gently spiced oak to this attractive, medium-bodied sangiovese. It's bright, too, with the grape's natural acidity and savoury tannins coming into play to lift and beautifully define the 5-year-old wine. Drink by 2036.

Named in honour of Mario Marson's mother, Grazia, the white blend pays homage to the family's winemaking heritage in Italy's Friuli region. The golden colour and the honeysuckle, vanilla, quince, ginger nut and citrus aromas suggest richness, but one taste dispels any thought of heaviness. It's nimble across the tastebuds, aided by a gentle creaminess and concentration of fruit. Drink by 2029.

Weller is a “wheated” bourbon, meaning that it doesn’t have the spicy rye notes found in a more traditional “ryed” bourbon. Originally created by the Stitzel-Weller Distilling Company, the brand is named after William Larue Weller, a distiller who is credited by some as being the first to use wheat as the secondary grain in bourbon as opposed to the more common rye. The style here is softly spoken on the nose, so give it ample time to open up. Threads of vanilla wafer biscuit, honeycombe and caramel nib weave a silky tapestry across the tongue with a seductively sweet, oily, tea biscuit-like finish where oak adds delicate spice. The overall effect feels elegant, understated. In short, a textural Bourbon that whispers and hints, which for some will make it all the more engaging. If you like wheated styles, put this next on your list. 45% Alc./Vol.

Weller Special Reserve no longer carries an age statement, but the wheated bourbon still brings caramel-forward joy and hints of watermelon and fresh-baked bread. ...The bourbon maintains its abundant sweetness on the palate, delivering a tasty yet classic mix of honey, caramel, vanilla, and light fruit. A very slight amount of oak rounds things out. Spice fails to make an appearance, likely a result of the wheated mashbill and relatively low proof, but in doing so, allows the sweet flavors to really come forth. French whiskies are so rarely encountered here that when they do arrive they come with a sense of mystery. Yet, if there are regional challengers to the malts that emerge from Scotland's Western Highlands, then Northern France would have to be one. Whiskies from Brittany can be hugely flavoursome, capturing a sense of place with the freshness of the seashore and a touch of rusticity that's occasionally augmented by varying degrees of peat. Kornog and Warenghem are standouts, the latter offering whiskies under their Armorik label. When the Australian importers visited Brittany earlier in the year, their barrel selection came with a further French twist: Full-term maturation in a cask that previously held Pineau des Charentes - a speciality aperitif of Cognac, generally categorised as a fortified wine (aka 'mistelle' or 'vin de liqueur' in France, however, being a blend of grape must and eau-de-vie it could be argued that the genre is more akin to a liqueur). There is one cask only, all for Australia and the whisky it yielded continues a theme of beautifully rounded, utterly mouthfilling and wonderfully textural malts from Warenghem, this time with a light honey, fruit compote and sponge cake character in the mix. On the palate, poached fruits work to heighten the succulence of the barley before trailing off with lively spices, vanilla and honey. Hints of brine and pepper add vitality to the finish as does a slightly tart quince or citric note. It's wound up in a beautifully integrated delivery that's dangerously easy to drink uncut. With water the profile loses some of its finer points, but fluffs into a deliciously creamy dram. Distilled in October 2015 and bottled in February 2023, the visual presentation might lack sophistication, however the final result has exceeded the importer's expectations. 150 bottles are on offer. 58.7% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Andrew Sutherland-Smith has fashioned this tawny from a base of 2002 Cabernet with some 1991 Fairfield sweet red and a bit of young shiraz from the Parola’s vineyard to add freshness. The average age of the blend is 15 years.

Dark onion brown colour with an onion brown and green olive hue. Top notes of marzipan and Christmas cake laced with some honeyed raisin characters are followed by walnuts and fine old brandy spirit. Rich luscious textural feel with flavours of marzipan and honeyed raisins intermixed with almond. Warm mellow spirit background. Long dry nutty rancio finish and aftertaste.

As Serge Valentin comments in his review below, the principal component here comes from the Grant's-owned Aisla Bay distillery on the Clyde Coast. Five different styles are produced here, but the most common is a light and rather sweet spirit. "Dalrymple" means it's teaspooned, however you could still consider it a single malt as it's likely there's only a trace amount from another distillery. 294 bottles were decanted from a Hogshead at 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... Dalrymple is a trade name for Ailsa Bay, and while our experience with this distillate is limited, a superb Dalrymple from Tri Carragh once left a strong impression. The official Ailsa Bay releases, however, have often been as cold as a North Sea flounder – if I may. Colour: pale gold. Nose: delightful, with an intriguing mix of tequila and gentian—no jest here. Ripe pear and apple follow, creating a harmonious bouquet. A touch of medicinal quality emerges, accompanied by green walnuts and a hint of mustard. With water: develops towards a fine fino sherry. Mouth (neat): very good indeed! Green apple, fir smoke, plasticine, Sichuan pepper, mustard, mezcal, and radish—spicy with a slight bite. With water: the fruitiness becomes more pronounced, but a peppery edge also takes hold. An unusual mix of sultanas and white pepper surprises the palate. Finish: long, with smoke overlaying those peppered sultanas, making for a slightly more challenging conclusion. Comments: the peat runs subtly throughout, never dominating but always present. ...At the risk of sounding obtuse, it seems like William Grant & Sons know what they’re doing. (There’s a reason they are the biggest family-owned whisky company in Scotland.) They’ve hit a bulls-eye with Ailsa Bay it seems... Taste: An initial hit of nuts and spices, not my preferred style per se. I find it improves hugely with some water. Thick mouthfeel with a nice chunk of vanilla foam blocks, but also fresh orchard fruits, crème brûlée and even tinned pineapple. Finish: Medium length. Gentle notes of white pepper linger, but are balanced out by notes of peach, peanuts and honey. - wordsofwhisky.com

A baby malt from a very new distillery founded in 2017. Nc’nean is located within the Drimnin Estate on a remote west Highland peninsula with spectacular views over Mull and Tobermory. The name is an abbreviation of 'Neachneohain', which translates as 'Queen of Spirits' from Gaelic. This deeply coloured expression from Watt Whisky was STR matured (that refers to casks that have been shaved, toasted and re-charred). The outturn was 282 bottles at 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... Mouth: quite strong, with caramel notes and generous amounts of oak spice. Pepper, cinnamon, oranges, more plums. A bit of a rough edge, with salty notes and a brief moment of alcohol heat. Candied ginger syrup, drops of clove oil and toasted oak, with a slightly tannic edge. Finish: medium and sweet, balancing citrus and oak spice. Very modern and spicy whisky, with a wood influence that I find too obvious, too contrived. STR casks are always a bit tricky and I think other distilleries are mastering them better. - whiskynotes.be
...Nose: The STR cask is in the driver’s seat.... Taste: Big whisky. Or intense more like. Lots of pepper, cloves and oak spices in general. There’s a touch of fudge, but also a slight vinous edge. The Old School Chardonnay is sourced from specific vineyard blocks in Mount Barker with barrel fermentation and maturation taking place in French oak of which 20% is new for a period of 10 months. Extended lees contact with fortnightly stirring and full malolactic fermentation enhance the wines texture to produce a full flavoured style Chardonnay.
Brilliant pale straw colour with highlights of green around the edges and a watery hue. Elevated aromas of peach, apricot and honeycomb fill the nostrils followed by hints of crème brulee, butterscotch and spice. Rich and mouth filling, the weighty palate is swamped with luscious ripe peach and apricot fruits. Notions of crème brulee, honeycomb and spicy nougat form the underbelly. A full, creamy textural feel counterpointed by a lick of fresh acidity through the long intensely flavoured finish.

Heady aromatics of ripe blackberry, liquorice and dark plum waft out of the glass complimented by some vanillin cedar, fennel and peppered earth notes. A rich, silky flow of opulent blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits decorate the full bodied palate. Vanillin oak, subtle earthy mocha and peppered fennel characters also chime in. Boasting ample power and a plush textural feel, it has velvet smooth tannins and a long seductive finish.

One sniff and you are standing on the mineral-rich soils of Heathcote, surrounded by the warm, inviting scents of the local bush. This is an evocative wine, of the place, of the dirt, capturing both the natural generosity of Heathcote shiraz and its environment beautifully, artfully. Earth, bush mint, undergrowth, acacia, briar, cassis, black cherry, anise and red licorice join forces with well-mannered oak to seduce. Seduction complete. Drink by 2038.

Downie is known for his meticulous vineyard work and dedication to expressing place through Pinot Noir.
The Gippsland Pinot Noir is blend of fruit from the Matthews Vineyard in Berrys Creek and Guendulain Farm in Yarragon. Matthews, planted in 1998 to MV6 on red volcanic soils, is a cool, damp, dry-grown site producing dense canopies. Guendulain, established in 2008 with high-density plantings (10,000 vines/ha) of MV6 and Pommard clones, contributes structure and depth.
Dark red core with black shaded edges and a red to dark red hue. Perfumed aromas of violet, red cherry, strawberry and clove entrance the olfactory senses with some earth, wild herb and spicy cedar notes also evident. Light in body but simultaneously rich and supple, the palate features expansive red to dark cherry and strawberry fruits over a subtle rhubarb, forest floor, spicy cedar and dried herb back drop. Outstanding power wave with polished tannins and a beautifully balanced freshness. The long, graceful conclusion, highly savoury.

Gee, I do love Gippsland pinot noir. This is beautifully modulated with a deeper, richer fruit profile, although it's far from fruity. In youth it simply shows more primary elements. A whorl of dark cherries, pips and black plums with pomegranate molasses, sweet spices and lots of autumnal fragrance – the earth and damp leaves. Lovely tannins, fresh acidity and, while it will last some distance, lovely now. Drink by 2036.

Fruit for the Mornington Pinot Noir is sourced from two sites planted in 1998: Mrs Nicks Vineyard in Balnarring, with MV6 on south-facing sandy loam, and Rivendel in Merricks North, home to D5V12 and Pommard clones on grey loam.
Slightly cloudy red to dark red colour with a vibrant red hue. Fragrant violet, sour to red cherry and strawberry scents delicately infused with clove flourish through the nostrils trailed by some fresh herb, earth and spice notes. Another difficult vintage on the Peninsula but this has a balance of aromas, flavours and texture. Founded by William Fevre in 1957 the domaine has grown to now become one of the biggest land owners in Chablis with 78 hectares of prestigious vineyards, of which 15.9 hectares are classified as Premiers Crus and 15.2 as Grand Crus. The Petit Chablis was matured in stainless steel vats for a period of 8-10 months to preserve freshness.

The DJW vineyard was planted by John and son Daniel Wilson in 1997. At the time, the aim was to produce additional fruit for the successful Wilson Polish Hill River Riesling but the vineyard had other ideas. From the first vintage it was immediately obvious that the DJW vineyard was quite different from the Polish Hill River vineyard. The grapes and bunches were larger and the vineyard produced a spectrum of flavours that had their own unique qualities. As a consequence a new Riesling was born and was named after the single vineyard from where it originates, the DJW.
Brilliant water like core with highlights of green around the outskirts. Intense lime juice, lemon and orange rind aromas bound out of the glass with terrific intensity complimented by some talc, green apple and slatey mineral notes. Engulfing the mouth watering palate are concentrated lime juice and citrus flavours which are wrapped up in a chalky texture that carries plenty of volume. Engaging chalky talc, orange rind, wet steel and flinty mineral elements lie underneath. Zingy acidity with a long forceful and highly energised finish.

Wilson’s Polish Hill River Riesling is sourced from their oldest vineyards planted over 40 years ago. Its miniscule yields typically produce a wine rich in citrus fruits within a steely structure, tight with lots of minerality. Beneath the iron stained clay lies a bed of decomposing slate and scattered quartz. It’s also not unusual to find remnant pottery and agricultural implements from the Polish Settlers who once lived and farmed the area now planted to this small vineyard.
A stunning Polish Hill Riesling that has intense, mouth filling flavours sculptured by chiselled acidity.
Brilliant very pale straw colour with gleaming green tinged edges and a watery hue. Powerful aromatics of lime, lemon and Granny Smith apple engulf the olfactory senses complimented by wet steel, subtle chalky talc like notes and minerals. Racy lime, citrus and to a lesser extent orange rind flavours are delivered with magnificent concentration, stunning drive and show a real textural presence within a chiselled structure. Whiskey Hunt Australia's debut with Woodford Reserve comes courtesy of the distillery's owners, Brown Forman. Guided by Woodford's Brand Ambassador, Andy Tsai, in December 2023 the group were invited to choose from three Woodford select profiles. Unlike most WHA releases which have been single cask picks, the Woodford Personal Selection Program asks customers to preference a bourbon that matches their palate, typically based on three distinct distillery 'profiles'. Jack Daniels (also owned by Brown Forman) have a similar approach. No.2 was judged the winner, showcasing aromas of oak shavings, cherry-dark-chocolate and dried peach, complemented by medium bodied flavours of burnt caramel, subtle smoke, orange spice cake and drying oak. Authentic, high-proof Caribbean rum in a super value one litre bottle.
Guyana is justly famous for its rich, heavy Demerara rums, named for a local river and produced from both pot and column stills. These can be aged for long periods (25-year-old varieties are on the market), but are more frequently used for blending with lighter rums. First served to English sailors in Jamaica in 1655, Woods was created for use by His Majesty's armed forces, remaining a mainstay of British naval life for over 300 years. Now produced at Guyana's Daimond Distillery using black strap molasses and the last wooden stills in the world, the blend contains both pot and (mostly) column distilled rums aged between 1.5 and 3 years. Probably the darkest rum on the market today, this brown sherry to treacle coloured spirit needs time to build on the nose and palate, and despite the mega alcohol is deceptively light on entry, but fans out with fantastic depth, suggesting molasses cake, treacle and liquorice strap before finishing with notes of coffee cake, chico lollies and dark chocolate. Arguably more dry than sweet, without the pronounced 'bitter sweetness' you might expect at this potent strength, it winds up dripping with treacle, molasses cake and chewy oak. The nose is a little shy, and don't go looking for complexity, but it will add a prototypical Demerara quality to Tiki cocktails. Old school sailors will keep it neat or add sweet mixers to taste. 57% alc./vol.

Rich and concentrated yet refined and structured, the medium to full bodied palate is redolent in fleshy red to black currant, liquorice and mulberry fruits. Lending further complexity are spicy vanillin cedar, earth, delicate tobacco and bay leaf accents. Fine grained, sturdily built tannin framework yet quite polished in it’s feel. Marrying finesse with power it finishes very long and eloquent with a deep core of fruit.

The 2021 John Riddoch Limited Release Cabernet Sauvignon is a brilliant wine. It is achingly intense yet is defined by its levity, which is not a common attribute in Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine expounds the virtues of the red gravel in which the fruit was grown, via its iodine and crushed shells, cassis and blood, sweet marrow and tobacco. It tastes so clearly of the place, which is a wonderful thing. The back palate swells with flavor, framed by the earth and the attuned oak. This is a tribute to the earth, an ode to it. Plentiful tannins bob along on the current of fruit. This will cellar interminably. It's up there in both quality and feel with the 2010, or so I think. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. One of the best vintages in Coonawarra for many years. Little wonder this release of the John Riddoch is one of the best since the initial release from the 1982 vintage. Aromas of violets and red berry with a slightly cherry glaze character adding further intrigue. The palate is medium weight and refined but with tremendous power and persistence. A combination of hogsheads and barriques has been used to deliver the perfect level of oak. One of the best of these I can recall. Drink 2024-2054.

The fruit density and purity here are impressive. Of all the wines in the Yalumba Grenache collection, for me, this is the value pick. A cracking wine which is seriously good buying. The fruit comes from old bush vines which were planted in 1929 and 1949 in the Tri-Centenary Vineyard in Vine Vale. The two blocks were harvested for the wine, with the first seeing 40% whole bunch fermentation and the second 33%. A garnet/crimson colour, the nose is utterly gorgeous. This is Grenache on steroids. Strawberries and cream, florals, bergamot, spices and cherries. Take everything that is good about Grenache and it is jam-packed into this wine. It also offers that typical Grenache tannin mix of silky and sandy. Showing good balance and length, this is a superb example of a top-notch Barossa Grenache. Drink now and for the next eight years. This is the younger vine bottling, coming mainly off vines planted in '08. Up to three weeks on skins; maturation in steel and old puncheons and foudre. This is a nice foil to the Old Vine bottling, showing what relatively youthful vines can do on this great site. There’s an open red-berried and cherry fruitfulness, with red florals supported by savoury spice and a foundation of purposeful natural tannin. This doesn’t have the mineral depth of the Old Vine, but the fruit vibrancy and exuberance yield their own rewards. Drink by 2030.

Picked with free flowing acidity and supported by vanilla cake and grated nutmeg oak nuances. It’s still light on its feet but will satisfy the chardonnay drinker who chooses wine based on taste and substance. Serve alongside a homemade salmon quiche.

Antinori’s Peppoli was first made in 1985 and year in year out proves to be a reliable, great value Chianti Classico. Produced from predominately Sangiovese grapes, the wine was aged for approximately 9 months in large Slavonian oak casks with a small parcel in stainless steel tanks to preserve the freshness of fruit.
Dark red in colour with black shaded edges and a red to dark red hue. Lifted red to dark currant and dark cherry aromas infused with dried herbs and tobacco are followed by some earth and spice notes. Fleshy red to dark currant and dark to black cherry fruits carry medium body weight and are flanked by some tobacco, dried herb and spicy earth elements. Finishes slightly dryish with chewy tannins and bright underlying acidity. The savoury finish generously endowed with fruit.

Named in honour of the two Barossans who planted a vineyard in 1912, the Eddies Old Vine Shiraz is a blend of this century plus vineyard along with fruit from a 73 year old vineyard and a block planted in 1975. Maturation took place in French oak hogsheads of which 50% were new for a period of 30 months.
Outstanding colour featuring a super dense and saturating inky black core along with an equally deep black dark red hue. Sent wafting through the nostrils are potent scents of ripe blackberry, liquorice, dark plum and mocha followed by vanillin oak, earthy dark chocolate and spice notes. Rich and voluptuous, the full bodied palate is layered with a thick coating of blackberry, liquorice, dark plum and dark chocolate fruits. Toasty vanillin oak, earthy mocha and spice elements lie underneath. Bold, dense and possessing exceptional power it has a firm yet velvety tannin structure. Concludes very long and opulent yet robust.

Bleasdale has been growing Malbec since the late 1800’s and produced the regions first Malbec table wine in 1961. Today they are one of the leading exponents of this variety. The fruit for their Generations Malbec was sourced from three estate vineyard blocks and two specialist growers with maturation taking place in a mix of new (10%) and seasoned French oak puncheons for a period of 12 months.
Pitch black in colour with a deep dark purple black tinged hue. Pronounced ripe blueberry, plum and dark cherry aromas intermingle with hints of liquorice, dried herbs, earth, subtle vanillin cedar and spice. Rich and fleshy textured yet elegant, blueberry, dark plum and red liquorice fruits are layered across the mid weighted palate. Charming the back half are dried herb, dusty earth and spicy cedar characters. Slightly dryish fine grained tannins provide an excellent framework. Driven by blue fruit it finishes fresh, refined and long. Winner of 3 trophies and numerous gold medals.

For 124 years, five generations of the Bujanda family have produced some of the finest wines from Rioja. It was Joaquín Martínez Bujanda who started the company with 10 hectares of vines in Rioja Alavasa and over the years the estate has expanded to include vineyards across the region.
A blend of 85% Tempranillo, 7% Mazuelo, 6% Graciano and 2% Garnacha aged for 30 months in a mixture of French (70%) and American (30%) oak barrels. Deep black dark red core with a dark red hue. Pronounced liquorice, dark raspberry and black cherry aromas are interwoven with vanillin oak, earthy mocha, leather and spice notes. The medium bodied palate is flush with liquorice and black raspberry fruits which meld into a back drop of earth, vanillin oak, spicy mocha and leather. Domaine Clarendon is the ambitious project of Clarendon Hills winemaker Roman Bratasiuk and his son Alex. Planted in 2006 using Astralis cuttings the vineyard is dry grown with yields at less than 1 tonne per acre. The vineyards soil structure is solid rock (the vineyard cultivator broke two 'industrial-as' Caterpillar row rippers on rocks the size of houses) and it is located 315 metres above sea level - the highest altitude vineyard in Clarendon and also McLaren Vale.
A superb Syrah that boasts formidable concentration, power and structure.
Sourced directly from the winery this museum release delivers outstanding value when one considers the bottle age behind it and the fact that the current vintage (2020) is selling for $32.99. A no brainer buy if you like rich, robust reds.
Exceptional colour for a Syrah with 12 years bottle age behind it displaying an impenetrable inky black heart along with an equally deep dark red black hue. Engulfing the olfactory senses are potent aromas of ripe blackberry, liquorice and black cherry which intermix with some vanillin cedar, traces of dark chocolate and peppered earth notes. Boasting magnificent density, power and depth of fruit along with a firm structure, the bold, weighty palate is well and truly alive and kicking. After a high flying career in marketing Ingrid Groiss returned to her family origins, enrolling in viticulture, oenology and wine marketing at the University of Vienna. During those studies she gained experience with producers such as Domäne Wachau, Birgit Braunstein and Birgit Eichinger. She had to play second fiddle to her chief winemaker dad until in 2010 when she went head-to-head with him in a blind taste-off of their own wines, with the victor being handed the winemaker's reins. Needless to say Ingrid came out on top.
Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Intense pear, red apple skin and musk aromas flood the nostrils followed by some quince and delicate spice notes. Delicious pear and red apple fruits glide across the palate imparting a slippery feel along the course of their journey. Juicy, crisp acidity lifts the intensity of flavour even further. Quince, lime, infusions of fresh herbs and wet stone elements also chime in. Excellent concentration finishing with an energized zing on the long moreish finish. A wonderful entry level example of Gruner Veltliner.

Le Brun de Neuville is one of the leading producers in the limestone slopes of the Côte de Sézanne, one the southern sub-regions of Champagne. Their vineyards are predominantly Chardonnay and they are committed to encouraging a sustainable approach to viticulture by adopting increasingly environmentally friendly practices and the resulting wines are certified 'Haute Valeur Environnementale'. The vineyards are fascinating with only a thin layer of soil covering the intensely chalky soil.
Their Côte Blanche is 100% Chardonnay from the 45 year old vines. The harvest base is 2016 with 52% reserve wines spending 60 months on lees before disgorgement and release.
Pours with a fine satiny mousse that shows good hold over a pale straw pale gold coloured base. The bead is very persistent and fine. Nosing offers up a classic Champagne sniff of baked bread, dried honey, yeast lees, brioche and cashew that’s quite intoxicating. Rich and expressive with a cream tinged mouth feel and dry chalky finish, baked bread, pear, yeast lees and brioche flavours are quite full across the palate. Citrus and roasted cashew like nuances the back drop. Vivid acidity with a long bready, oily textured aftertaste.

Firmly standing at the top of the tree of Australian Chardonnays, Leeuwin Estate have turned out yet another spectacular release from the 2021 vintage. Barrel fermented and matured in new French oak barriques with regular lees stirring for a period of 11 months.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a subtle tint of green around the edges and a watery hue. Captivating aromas of white peach, nectarine and dried honey delicately infused with gun flint engulf the nostrils. Biscuity oak, subtle cashew, citrusy nougat and spice notes add a further dimension of complexity. Beautifully shaped, expansive and refined the palate is layered with fleshy white peach and nectarine fruits which overlay a biscuity nougat, subtle dried honey, ginger spice, roast almond and gun flint back drop. Tremendously powerful yet relatively light on its feet it has a fresh silken like feel. Finishes with exceptional length and finesse.

The 2021 Art Series Chardonnay leads with a distinctly floral nose: jasmine and white garden rose, wisteria and lemon blossom. The season was a challenging one in Margaret River, defined by the rainfall, which was constant. The temperatures were modest (not cool, as plenty of rain might suggest),and given that the region is so diverse in terms of distances between vineyard areas, this created quite a patchwork of outcomes for producers. On the palate, the wine is powerful and savory—it leans heavily on exotic dry spice and cracked honeycomb, with hints of salted butter on fresh white bread, beeswax and salted pink grapefruit. Stylistically, it is not dissimilar to the 2017; however, the dovetailing of acid and fruit feels seamless and well matched here. The wine is piercing and structural, tightly coiled and almost rigid, in the best of ways. It's an impressive wine, one that, at this stage of its life, is defined by its penetrating acid line. Sealed under screw cap.

There’s always an anticipation when a new vintage arrives. This doesn’t disappoint – it’s archetypal Art Series: powerful, rich and layered with flavour from stone fruit, pink grapefruit and Meyer lemon to a touch of mandarin. The palate builds with creamy lees, oak spice and some phenolics – the oak is superbly integrated, and pure acidity leads this to a persistent finish. Impressive as always. Drink by 2034.

I seem to have missed tasting the 2020 LEAS Chardonnay, which is kind of disappointing. It’s a blip in my Leeuwin radar, given I’ve tasted every one of them on release since the 1992 vintage. Anyway, teeth gnashing aside, the bottle seems to be lighter these days, which is very good.
Pear, lime, grapefruit, floral too, with a distinct mint/aniseed top note, backed with discreet spicy cinnamon/ginger oak. It’s fresh and lively, quite saline too, flinty and chalky, a honey ginger drink character in the mix, along with a cucumber coolness and biscuit spices, a whole lot of presence and power here, delivered in a kind of understated, but confident way. The finish is very long, and refreshing. Gee, this is good wine. It ripples through the mouth like a flat white stone pitched across a cool lake. That’s an image for you, and I’ll leave you with that. Drink 2025-2040+

Whilst still a travelling consultant winemaker, on Ben Riggs’ list of favourite wine regions to visit and work was central and southern Italy. It was there that his love of Montepulciano began, and those memories have inspired him to make this Aussie version from fruit grown in the Adelaide Hills. Montepulciano is the name of both a grape variety and a town in Tuscany, Italy, which causes confusion as the two are not actually connected in any way.
Dense inky black colour with a very deep dark red black hue. Dark to black cherry and liquorice aromas engulf the nostrils followed by some dark plum, spicy vanillin cedar and scorched earth notes. Rich and full in body, the juicy palate is flush with morello and black cherry, liquorice as well as dark plum fruits. Slightly chewy in its mouthfeel it boasts excellent concentration and textural volume. Subtle dried herb, scorched earth and spice elements linger underneath. Ripe, sternly built tannin structure with a long, generously fleshed conclusion.

Formerly known as Powell & Son, Dave Powell, of Torbreck fame and son Callum have now decided to take separate paths on their winemaking journey. Dave rebranding his venture Neldner Road. From the outstanding 2021 vintage Dave Powell has hit the bullseye with this entry level release. Sourced from mature Barossa Valley vineyards, the majority located along the region’s North-Western ridge in Marananga and Seppeltsfield with a component also coming from Lyndoch Valley in the Southern Barossa. Fruit parcels are vinified separately in concrete vats before being basket pressed and assembled into large format 4,500 litre French oak foudres for 15 months maturation.
Sumptuous, dense and opulently rich, this is Woodcutter’s Shiraz on steroids.
Outstanding colour featuring an impenetrable inky black heart along with a near equally deep black dark red hue. Aromas of ripe blackberry, liquorice, dark plum and black cherry waft out of the glass and integrate with fennel, smoky vanillin oak and peppered earth notes. Lavishly rich, deeply concentrated and super seductive, the large scaled palate still manages to maintain a deft balance. Completely saturating the mouth is a tidal wave of liquorice, blackberry, black cherry and dark to black plum fruits which carry a thick, dense texture. Notions of scorched earth, vanillin cedar and peppered fennel lie underneath. An absolute cracker. Deep blood red in colour, this is ripe and alluring. The nose gives up aromas of chocolate, plums, cherries, licorice, soy, beef stock and miso. There really is so much packed in here and yet, everything remains in balance. The wine is seamless with good intensity and silky tannins. Very good length here too, which persists impressively. Will drink well for the next ten to fifteen years and anyone with a case in the cellar in a decade will think themselves to be a most astute wine buyer. Drink 2024-2039.

Matured in predominately in older French oak barrels. Dark red core with black tinged edges and a dark red hue. Fragrant aromas of ripe dark cherries, plum and anise meld into subtle spicy cedar and fresh herb notes. Delicious dark cherry, plum and wild strawberry fruits flood the mouth with anise, spicy cedar and infusions of fresh herbs lying underneath. Supplely textured it has superb power, silky tannins and a long intensely flavoured finish.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.

In the style of previous releases with its distinctive firm, linear structure and cool, leafy, herbals, but showing more depth of flavour and intensity. The 2018 year seems to have been very kind. Brambly, dark berry fruits, wood smoke, earth notes, deep spice, with a spray of fine tannins from edge to edge. A work of some complexity. Drink by 2027.
