    GUYANA
    $129. 99
    Bottle
    $1559.88 Dozen
    ABV: 57%

Authentic, high-proof Caribbean rum in a super value one litre bottle.

Guyana is justly famous for its rich, heavy Demerara rums, named for a local river and produced from both pot and column stills. These can be aged for long periods (25-year-old varieties are on the market), but are more frequently used for blending with lighter rums. First served to English sailors in Jamaica in 1655, Woods was created for use by His Majesty's armed forces, remaining a mainstay of British naval life for over 300 years. Now produced at Guyana's Daimond Distillery using black strap molasses and the last wooden stills in the world, the blend contains both pot and (mostly) column distilled rums aged between 1.5 and 3 years. Probably the darkest rum on the market today, this brown sherry to treacle coloured spirit needs time to build on the nose and palate, and despite the mega alcohol is deceptively light on entry, but fans out with fantastic depth, suggesting molasses cake, treacle and liquorice strap before finishing with notes of coffee cake, chico lollies and dark chocolate. Arguably more dry than sweet, without the pronounced 'bitter sweetness' you might expect at this potent strength, it winds up dripping with treacle, molasses cake and chewy oak. The nose is a little shy, and don't go looking for complexity, but it will add a prototypical Demerara quality to Tiki cocktails. Old school sailors will keep it neat or add sweet mixers to taste. 57% alc./vol.

"You can’t go too far wrong picking up one of these for the home bar. " - thelonecaner.com

Reported to be a great substitute for traditional navy styles, this cocktail workhorse is ideal for tropical and Tiki recipes calling for a bold dark rum. The molasses-based blend of pot still rums includes some unaged components and others aged up to 3 years in ex-Bourbon casks. While it's not as overpowering as category equivalents like Plantation's OFTD or Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof, the producers emphasise it is primarily intended for mixing rather than straight sipping. Worthy Park also make no secret of the fact that it's caramel coloured, however that's aligned with other brands such as Lamb's or Woods. 54.5% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Overall, the melange of solid primary tastes and occasional jagged edges makes the 109 borderline as a sipper – I would not drink it regularly that way myself – but I think it’s excellent for what it was meant to be, and would handily wake up any cocktail you care to dump it into. I’m a simple guy with no real mixing experience, so you’ll forgive me for sticking with that old standby of the rum ‘n’ coke, at which this thing absolutely shines (and look forward to a flurry of notes from various bartenders who want to suggest alternatives and school me better). So, then: is it gold or pyrite? I can hear you ask. Honestly, I believe the WP 109 is neither: it’s simply an unpretentious, firm, tasty rum that doesn’t forget its backdam antecedents, and yes, it’s definitely not important what they call it — it would be similarly good if they called it The Son of Kong. A little older, a touch less bite, and it would be almost the perfect midrange rum, and given what it costs it’s great value for money to boot. You can’t go too far wrong picking up one of these for the home bar. - thelonecaner.com

On the nose Worthy Park 109 Jamaica Rum is quite smoky, with a slightly burnt note to it. Beneath this is a nice hit of banana, rum and raisin ice cream and some red apple. Theres plenty of caramel, toffee and some milky coffee. I’m not getting much of the signature English Breakfast tea. Sipped at full strength its actually quite smooth and not at all “fiery”. I’m not getting something say like J Wray and Nephew or even Worthy Park’s own Rum Bar White Overproof. That said it still backs a big punch of flavour. I’m definitely getting some of the unaged rum as I continue to sip this neat. Some light varnish and petrol notes with unmistakable funky flavours of pineapple, red apple and some guava. It has a sweet note to it that reminds me a little of Myers’s but this just has a bit more complexity and just feels more complete. The mid palate has a nice length to it with some caramel, toffee and English Breakfast tea fading in and out. This is complemented alongside the funkier more astringent  youthful notes. On the finish it fades out rather quickly and has quite a dry finish. Lets be fair – its not meant as a high class sipper. Worthy Park already have a few of those around. It’s the kind of rum you might drink as a chaser with a pint and just have a mouthful from time to time. It’s hair on your chest kind of stuff. A bit like Pusser’s Gunpowder, which I must admit I think hasn’t been quite the same since it went to a Guyana only blend. 4.5 stars - thefatrumpirate.com

Notes from the producers... Opens with notes of fresh tropical fruit, hints of banana, pineapple, and orange. Distinct flavours of crème brûlée, cacao, and coffee, accompanied by the unmistakable Jamaican funk resulting from the high ester pot-still rums.

The Special Casks Series is a collection of molasses rums distilled, aged and blended at Worthy Park aimed at exploring different secondary maturations. Distilled in 2012 in the Forsyths double retort copper still, in this example, the initial 8-years in ex-bourbon barrels followed time in barrels that had previously contained Calvados (apple brandy) for a further 2 years. Eight barrels were finally blended before bottling without chill filtration in 2022. Expect subtle apple, woody aromas and flavours in an approachable, nuanced sipping rum. 45% Alc./Vol.

"...this could be just about as close to Worthy Park perfection as I could’ve hoped for." - Stephen James, rumdiariesblog

Worthy Park's 100% pot still, estate molasses-based rum is the oldest official release to date, taken from their second year of 'revived production' since re-opening in 2005. Classified as WPL (Worthy Park Light) with an ester count between 60-119 gr/hl AA, the 12 year old was introduced at the UK Rumfest in October 2018 where more than a few fans were left with huge smiles on their faces after tasting it. If you are into definitive, all-natural, non chill filtered rums sans covert additives, this is guaranteed to be one of the highlights of the year. Split between 4000 bottles for the USA and 4000 for Europe (that's right, we would have missed out yet again if it weren't for this shipment!), rum collectors and drinkers should jump on it. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. Very limited stocks. 56% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Complexity by the bucket load.  Such a well balanced presentation of the distillate too. Nothing is too aggressive or ramped up, everything is in perfect harmony. Each element has its part to play, no matter how big or small and as an experience it just sings.  I can’t help thinking that we’re witnessing something really special here. Maybe a coming of age for a distillery, now back producing its own estate bottlings, using its own estate molasses following a hiatus of over 40 years. It displays huge confidence and the self assurance of a distillery that is really beginning to stretch its legs and I’m so excited for what is to come from them. It is fully compliant with the Jamaican GI, is devoid of any kind of shenanigans, is as honest as the day is long and (I don’t say this lightly as I’m a HUGE fan of the Habitation Velier 2006 WPM and the Single Estate 57% release) this could be just about as close to Worthy Park perfection as I could’ve hoped for. 5 stars - rumdiariesblog.wordpress.com/

...They’ve been working and improving and they’ve pretty much nailed it for me with this one. It has an almost perfect balance and a high level of complexity in the flavours. Which is what I look for in a “sipping” rum. There is no chance of me adding any coke to this one. Exceptional. 5 stars - thefatrumpirate.com

Worthy Park Rum-Bar White Overproof Jamaica Rum (700ml)
    JAMAICA
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 63%

New and noteworthy for anyone chasing elusive high-strength Caribbean white rums is this 63% ABV offering from Worthy Park. Sticking to tradition, it blends three un-aged rums, all 100% copper pot-distilled from three different marques (WPEL, WPL and WPE). An alternative to Wray & Nephew's Overproof or Haitian Clairins, it guarantees to maximise flavour, 'funk' and mouthfeel. Recommended with a grapefruit soda for a tasty Summer cocktail.

Tasting note: Clear. Piquant and spirity aromas suggesting green olive brine, sour dough, bitter cocoa and later hints of creamy soda. Extreme abv yet surprisingly relaxed, rounded and full with creamy textured flavours of brown sugar and vanilla cake frosting countered by a grassy / caney / peppery vibrancy. Finishes tingling, almost fruity (dried banana, mango), oily, medium long. First rate white rum. 63% Alc.Vol.

Other reviews... Anyone buying this should not view this as a super charged Bacardi. The only similarity is the colour. If you enjoy a Sting-Wray then you might want to consider trying this instead. I personally think this might have just a little bit more flavour. 4 Stars - thefatrumpirate.com

Notes from the producers... On the nose the banana notes dominate with a beautiful balance of other exotic fruit continuing through to the pallet supported with that classic grassy vegetal Jamaican funk.

"made by one company that remembers its roots and continues to distil a real rum." - thelonecaner.com

Ask a native where you could sample J.Wray & Nephew over-proof rum, and they will tell you knock on the door of any household. Such is the legendary status of this spirit that it accounts for 90% of rum sales in Jamaica. Other brands produced under the J.Wray & Nephew name are Captain Morgan, Coruba and the renowned Appleton Estate range. Use this product in classic rum punches with tropical juices. Alternate with flavoured rums and liqueurs for something new. Also great in the traditional Mai Tai and Daiquiri.

Other reviews... This is the flagship rum from Wray and the rum ... familiar instantly on the nose, with a mixture of citrus and petrol notes, very aromatic with florals and the raw alcoholic notes one expects from an overproof rum. The body is a bit tougher and astringent, slightly charcoal-dusted but otherwise intense with fruit, both citrus and tropical, with overtones of overripe banana, bubble gum, and a touch of eucalyptus on the finish. Surprisingly approachable despite the heavy alcohol level. - drinkhacker.com

...I’m not a huge white rum lover but this is as good as I have had.  It will give a massive kick to tiki style cocktails, where it is very often used.  W&N Overproof is very popular and highly regarded amongst bartenders and mixologists. Rightly so as well. The danger in this drink maybe that at 63% its very drinkable.  At the price it is also very good value.  W&N Overproof needs to be evaluated on what it is.  It is a very good white overproof mixer.  It’s availability and price makes it a no-brainer to have on hand. 4/5 stars - thefatrumpirate.com

...I have gained a sort of sneaking appreciation for overproofs, including this one, because while it lacks the subtlety of a more refined 40% variation (subtlety? don’t make me laugh…the thing is like a charging brontosaurus on steroids at rutting time), it makes an intense, strong, powerfully tasting mix with whatever you decide to chase it. Try adding cola to a 40% low-ender and then to the White Overproof and try and tell me this one doesn’t have more character, more taste, more…well, cojones. It absolutely is not afraid to charge the gates and get the hell off the reservation.  When you drink J. Wray’s clear hooch, reader, there’s no ifs, ands or buts — you know Elvis has left the building; and didn’t just exit, he took off with rocket-powered, turbo-charged steel-toed boots. And a jet pack.... made by one company that remembers its roots and continues to distil a real rum. - thelonecaner.com

Notes on Black Tot Master Blender's Reserve... While comparisons with the inaugural release are inevitable, the Master Blender's Reserve is not simply a slightly older version of last year's 50th Anniversary rum, but a different composition altogether. Different countries, still types and ages have contributed with Head Blender, Oliver Chilton opting for a 'fruitier' expression. It also celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the last rum ration given to the Australian Navy after separating from the Royal Navy, although Australians serving on British ships could still receive rum - in 1921 this was also forbidden. Adding substance to the sentiment, 6.7% of the blend is from Beenleigh Distillery (ten years aged in Queensland and four years continentally). At its heart is the 'perpetual' base spirit (14% of last year’s 50th Anniversary release), re-casked into ex-sherry butts and blended with rums between 9 and 24 years old from Guyana, Barbados, Trinidad, Jamaica. These make up the majority of the blend. 6000 bottles are available globally, however Australia's allocation will be closer to several hundred. Decanted from the casks with zero added sugar and no chill filtration. 54.5% Alc./Vol. 95 points

A nicely integrated and elegant sipping rum to enjoy on its own. 40% Alc./Vol. 90 points

Other reviews...Deep amber color. Burnt caramel, straw, and peppery spice aromas. A dry, reserved style. International Review of Spirits Award: Silver Medal 88 points (Highly Recommended) - tastings.com

The Matusalem Rum company was started by the Camp brothers in 1872 as a family affair. The 'new' Cuban rum rapidly caught on in the world's markets. In the early 1940's the company experienced a period of tremendous growth and by the 1950s it had already captured 50% of the Cuban market, making it the leading rum sold in Cuba. Today, descendants of the founders produce Ron Matusalem in the Dominican Republic.

Solera 7 is a new addition to the range, produced from molasses and drawn from the company's Solera system. Expect a fruity, medium bodied rum with plenty of sweet spice flavours. The brand “Matusalem” was named after the Biblical Patriarch, Methuselah who was said to have lived for 969 years, so symbolising the patient ageing and old world craftsmanship used to give Ron Matusalem Rum its exceptional flavour. 40% Alc./Vol.

Carribbean Class.

Besides whisky - possibly the only other wood-aged spirit capable of arousing the same passions comes from ‘the reed which brings forth honey’ (without the help of bees)– mainly because it’s capable of a similar dizzying complexity and diversity that whisky achieves. Rums are as diverse as whiskies, and much depends on how the distiller and blender create their product. Rum is also thought to be the world's oldest spirit with its cultural heritage centered in the Caribbean and its history inextricably intertwined with colonialism, slavery and the creation of capitalism. If you haven't been inspired to try the aged rums of the Caribbean then you’ve got a lot to look forward to. This applies not only to those who’ve never moved beyond Bundaberg and Coke since high school, but more so to those who are serious about wine, whisky and brandy - in short, those of us who are passionate about ‘flavour’.
