Pale coloured, dry rosés akin to what the French call "Vin Gris" have become hugely popular, usually enjoyed with Mediterranean dishes like grilled fish, tian (a cold vegetable flan) and salads, but also as an aperitif with finger foods. Made as a "Rose de presse" (juice straight off the press), the grapes are pressed rather than macerated (as is the case in a "Rose de Saignee"). Grenache, Cinsault and Cabernet are typically used. Following the lead of Southern France, Australian winemakers are responding with affordable, fresh wines of high quality. A glass of chilled rosé on a hot summers day adds a casual elegance to bbqs or alfresco drinks with friends. While rose can range from sweet to very dry, we favour the latter as the perfect 'middle of the day' wine, either on its own or to match a diversity of foods. France leads the way. Look out for top expressions from Bandol and Tavel, however the Langeudoc is home to a bevy of Rose bargains.
