If you've been drinking malts for decades but have never heard of Macduff, neither had we! It's long been used as a blending product and while it's still bottled as a single malt, it's usually under the name "Glen Deveron". It's most commonly found as a 10 year old with the house style tending towards fruity, sherry sweetness.

The Macduff distillery was founded in 1958 or 1962 (depending on your source) by a syndicate of four - George Crawford, Brodie Hepburn, James Stirret and Morty Dyke. Over the course of the 1960s, further stills were installed, bringing the total to four. Whisky exports increased significantly. In 1990, a further still was added, bringing the total to five - a rather unusual number, indeed there is only one other distillery with a combination of two wash and three spirit stills, namely Talisker.

Nowadays, just fewer than half a million bottles of single malt are released from the distillery each year. The majority are exported to France and Russia.

Bacardi purchased Macduff in 1992, then subsequently transferred the distillery to John Dewar and Sons LTD, the present owners.

Distilled in 1989 and bottled in 2013, this 24 year old gem from reputable independent bottlers, Cadenheads, was matured in a sherry butt. Only 516 bottles produced. It's a challenge to find anything from this distillery in Europe, let alone Australia.
