Highly unusual, in fact only the second Balmenach to hit our shelves in twenty years.
Situated in the district of Cromdale on the banks of the River Spey, the Balmenach distillery stands beneath the nearby hill of Tom Lethendry where the Jacobites were defeated in the Battle of Cromdale in 1690. It is one of the earliest distilleries sanctioned as a result of the Excise Act 1823. In 1897 Balmenach was purchased by Glenlivet and was served by its own railway branch off the Strathspey Railway until 1969. The distillery closed in 1941 and re-opened in 1947 following the expansion of its facilities. Presently owned by Inver House Distillers, who also use the operation to create their premium gin, "Caorunn".

Unpeated malt is sourced from independent maltsters with maturation taking place mainly in refill US hogsheads and some Spanish oak. The house style tends towards a vegetal, oily, full bodied dram. Balmenach is not currently bottled by its present custodians and has only rarely found its way into independent releases such as this from Cadenheads, drawn from two sherry hogsheads and bottled in 2016 with a total outturn of 744 bottles. Expect a chewy textured malt, "...treacle and toffee mingling with all spice and rich woody notes." 46% Alc./Vol.
