The firm of William Cadenhead Ltd, Wine and Spirit Merchants, was founded in 1842 and is Scotland's oldest independent bottler. The company was in the ownership of the same family until taken over by J & A Mitchell & Co.Ltd in 1972, the proprietors of Springbank distillery. Today, Cadenhead is legendary for bottling excellent single cask whiskies. The company places particular emphasis on the individuality and purity of each bottling. All whiskies are bottled undiluted at their natural maturing strength and are not subject to any artificial processing such as chill filtering or the addition of caramel.

The Lochside Distillery was in the town of Montrose, in the Eastern Highlands and started life as a brewery in 1781. The brewery remained in the hands of Scottish & Newcastle until 1957, when it was closed and sold to Macnab Distilleries. The new owners converted Lochside to distillation, producing both grain and malt whiskies for the Spanish market, and the Sandy McNab blended and 10yo single malt whiskies. Pernod Ricard eventually acquired, then closed Lochside in 1992 with the buildings being demolished in 2004-5 to make way for a housing development.

Tasting Notes: Pale straw colour with water like hue. Offers superb fruity aromas of ripe pear and passionfruit with a hint of peaches and cream, vanilla and spice with a slightly salty savoury biscuit end note. The palate offers several distinct waves of flavour. The initial hit is bright, fresh and fruity, however very brief, then the whisky grips, the spirit warms up and the palate flavours take on a much more malty, rich cereal like character with hints of salt emerging over subtle grapefruit background, only for the fruit to re-appear briefly towards the back palate. Beautifully balanced. Very long aftertaste of peach and vanilla with tiny hints of smoke and salt. This whisky conceals an unexpected surprise due to the early fresh fruit characteristics, which then shift to a more mature flavour profile. Apart from its obvious collectibility, it's also a very appealing introduction to older malt whiskies without the $400+ outlay that 25yo distillery bottlings typically command.
