In the winter of 1881, Albert Bacon Blanton was born into one of the first families of bourbon history. At the age of 16, he started work in the distillery as an office boy and fast became a leading pioneer in the development of bourbon. From the time he was made company president in 1921 till his retirement in 1952, his distillery expanded from 44 to 144 buildings to become the largest distillery of its day. During that period Colonel Albert Blanton created his very special and limited supply of bourbon - his private reserve – personally selected and stored in what now is known as the famous 'Warehouse H.' Although Colonel Blanton died in the spring of 1959, his legacy lives on in every bottle produced.

Today Blanton's is known as Kentucky's 'single barrel bourbon.' It earns this distinction because each bottle comes from a single barrel and is never blended with whiskeys of other ages. Thus, the age of Blanton's whiskey varies from bottle to bottle depending on the master distiller's decision that a particular barrel is ready for bottling. No age is printed on the label since individual barrels reach peak maturity at different times. Blanton’s is further distinguished by its use of a higher percentage of sweet corn than any other Bourbon as opposed to using cheaper grains. The tiny horse and jockey on the bottle stoppers have become a trademark of Blanton’s Single Barrel Bourbon and the company has recently produced a limited edition set of eight different stoppers, with horse and jockey in different strides and poses.

Tasting note: Bright deep gold colour. Classic Bourbon aromatics issue moderate scents of orange, clove and cinnamon over a sweet vanilla custard background. A trace of mintiness emerges. Soft, clean palate entry builds to a mildly spiced, gently warming palate profile - orange peel, vanillan oak and mixed nuts are followed by a hint of caramel on the back palate. Subtle, drying aftertaste of clove and vanilla with a hint of orange pith adding freshness. A stereotypical but well made Bourbon. 40% Alc./Vol. Barrel No. 194 tasted.
