Launched in March 2004, this is the first whisky distilled after the re-opening of Benromach in 1998 and is the first whisky distilled by Gordon and MacPhail. Commenting on the new 'Traditional' release, Ian Urquhart, managing director of Gordon & MacPhail Ltd, says, “At Benromach we are always keen to experiment and try different things. Using small batches of malted barley, peated to our specialist requirements, we were keen to explore the impact of peating levels... To produce our Benromach Traditional, we use malted barley with a phenol content of ten to twelve parts per million.' The result is a rich, fruity whisky balanced with a hint of smoke.

Tasting note: Very pale straw gold appearance with a pale green blush. Powerful aromatics open as a big malt / oatmeal hit with clean supporting vanillan oak. Second pass reveals suggestions of fruit and peel. Light to medium bodied, but showing solid concentration, the palate offers medium dry flavours of fresh grains with supporting spices adding depth. Spices persist into the aftertaste with traces of peat at the fade. A lovely entry level malt. Great stuff. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Nose: young, lively but very clean peat smoke. Taste: a natural harmony between smoke, barley and light vanillins; Finish: the gristy sweetness fades for more bitter oak. Balance: a much more comfortable and complete malt than it was a couple of years back with the peating level upped slightly but, vitally, finding much better balance. 40% Alc./Vol. Rating: 88 points. - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2008.

Other reviews... 'Whisky-pages has long regarded the decidedly old-fashioned Benromach Traditional to be one of the best value Speyside malts on the market, and cranking up the peating level has resulted in probably the finest heavily-peated mainland malt around.' - www.whisky-pages.com
